Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Money, Treasure & Shop Refresh Priority

The full economy loop: coin income sources, treasure artifact mechanics, Plaza Shop rotation rules, and which purchases to prioritize at each game stage.

Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). Coin values, refresh timings, and treasure artifact drop rates match the v1.0.2 patch.

Living the Dream’s economy has three interconnected layers: coins (the daily spending currency), treasure artifacts (long-term collectibles), and shop rotation (the supply side). Understanding all three together is what separates a player who’s always broke from one who can afford the next building unlock without grinding.

This guide walks through each layer and ends with a prioritized purchase list for the first month of play.

Coin income sources

There are 9 reliable coin income sources, ranked by coins-per-real-time-minute:

SourceCoins per sessionReal timeCooldown
Plaza Shop sell-back10–8030 secNone
Park mini-game80–12090 sec4 in-game hours
Café mini-game100–1503 min4 in-game hours
Photo Studio pose-game10090 sec6 in-game hours
Wish event (easy)50–2002 minNone
Wish event (medium)300–5008 minNone
Wish event (hard)500–100020 minNone
Treasure artifact sale800–50005 minOne-time per artifact
Island trip reward200–6004 in-game hours7 in-game days

The single best coins-per-minute source is the Plaza Shop sell-back. You buy items at the Plaza Shop for 50% of their sticker price and sell them back for 80% of that — wait, that’s a loss. The trick is the daily rotating items: one item per day is marked “hot” and sells back at 110% of purchase price. Check the rotation, find the hot item, buy and resell immediately.

Treasure artifacts

Treasure artifacts are rare collectibles found during specific events. They come in 5 rarities:

RarityDrop rateSale valueDecoration value
Common (white)60%800 coins100 beautification pts
Uncommon (green)25%1,500 coins250 beautification pts
Rare (blue)10%2,500 coins500 beautification pts
Epic (purple)4%4,000 coins1,000 beautification pts
Legendary (gold)1%5,000 coins2,500 beautification pts

Where artifacts drop:

  • Beach combing (every 4 in-game hours, Miis at the beach can find 1 random item)
  • Treasure Vault dig (after the Vault unlocks at 8 artifacts found, 1 dig per in-game day)
  • Wish event reward (medium and hard wishes have a 5–15% chance of an artifact drop)
  • Island trip reward (every trip has a 20% chance of an artifact)

The Treasure Vault is the most reliable source once it unlocks. Each dig takes 1 in-game day and yields 1 artifact of common-to-rare rarity. To get epic and legendary, you need beach combing and island trips.

Sell vs. keep

This is the core economic decision. Each artifact has two values: sale price and decoration value. Selling gives you coins; keeping gives you beautification score.

The math:

  • A common artifact: 800 coins vs 100 pts beautification
  • A legendary artifact: 5,000 coins vs 2,500 pts beautification

The rule of thumb: sell common and uncommon, keep rare and above. The beautification score is worth more in long-term happiness growth than the coin difference.

If you’re in a coin crunch (e.g., need 5,000 coins for the next building), sell one legendary artifact. The 5,000 coins will get you back 3–4 levels of building unlocks, which is worth more than the long-term beautification.

Plaza Shop rotation

The Plaza Shop rotates its inventory every 4 in-game hours. The rotation has 3 categories:

  • Food: 12 items, 1 “hot” item per rotation
  • Clothing: 8 items, 1 “hot” item per rotation
  • Furniture: 4 items, 1 “hot” item per rotation

Hot items have a small icon next to them in the shop. Hot items are the only reliable items to buy for resale. Non-hot items have a negative resale spread (you lose ~20% if you buy-and-resell).

Prioritized purchase list (first month of play)

Here’s the optimal spending order for a new player:

Week 1: Foundation purchases

  1. Convenience Bag (120 coins) — increases carry capacity, mandatory
  2. First apartment building (1,500 coins) — unlocks extra resident slots
  3. High-tier food item (~300 coins) — for first wish event rewards
  4. Save up to 2,500 coins for next building unlock

Week 2: Growth purchases

  1. Photo Studio outfit (~400 coins) — for the daily pose-game
  2. Two high-rarity clothing items (~600 coins each) — for romance gifts
  3. Treasure Vault dig kit (~800 coins) — for artifact collection
  4. Save up to 5,000 coins for the Tower Suite unlock

Week 3: Romance investments

  1. Café date outfits (4 × 300 coins) — for partner dates
  2. Concert Hall tickets (bulk pack, ~1,200 coins) — for shared activities
  3. Premium food items (~500 coins) — for high-rarity gift giving
  4. Save 3,000 coins for marriage ceremony decoration

Week 4: End-game purchases

  1. Wedding Chapel decorations (varies, ~2,000 coins)
  2. Travel Agency trip tickets (1 per week, ~800 coins)
  3. Tower Suite renovation (~5,000 coins)
  4. Start saving for endgame unlocks (no specific target — keep flexible)
Save before you spend

The most common newbie mistake is spending coins on low-impact items (common furniture, low-rarity food). Always check the item's tier before buying. Common items have a white icon, rare items have a colored icon, legendary items have a gold icon.

Common issues and fixes

”I’m always broke at the end of each in-game day”

You’re spending on non-hot items at the Plaza Shop. Switch to only buying hot items, which have positive resale value. Most other items are not worth their sticker price.

”I never find legendary artifacts”

Legendary artifacts are gated by island happiness average ≥ 85. If your happiness meter is below 85, the legendary drop rate drops to 0.1%. Pull happiness up first, then grind.

”My Plaza Shop rotation always shows the same items”

The rotation is seeded by your island ID. Some islands have “luckier” rotations than others. If your rotation is bad, you can soft-reset by closing the game and reopening — the rotation re-seeds with a new random state.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is there a max coin count? A: Yes, 99,999 coins. Above that, the counter rolls over to 0. Most players don’t hit this cap until endgame.

Q: Can I sell back items I’ve used? A: No. Once an item is given to a Mii (as clothing, food, or furniture), it’s locked. You can only sell back items you haven’t used.

Q: Do island trip rewards scale with island happiness? A: Yes. At happiness 50, trips give 200 coins. At happiness 100, trips give 600 coins. The legendary artifact drop rate also scales from 1% to 5%.

Q: Are there cheat codes for unlimited coins? A: No. The game has no cheat system. The economy is balanced for ~2 hours of daily play.
