Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Face Paint & Makeup Tools Tutorial

A practical guide to the face paint editor: brush settings, blending modes, color theory, and how to build recognizable-but-original Mii looks.

Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). Editor mechanics reflect the v1.0.2 build.

Living the Dream’s face paint editor is a smaller, more focused tool than the full Creative Workshop — but it’s where most players spend their customization time, because face paint directly affects how a Mii looks in every screenshot and cutscene. This guide covers the editor mechanics, color theory for skin tones, and a few safe design patterns to avoid IP pitfalls.

The single most useful thing to understand: face paint is layered onto the Mii’s base face shape, not painted on a blank canvas. You can’t reshape the underlying face — only add color and pattern on top. So the editor is closer to “makeup” than “face redesign.”

Editor regions

The face paint editor divides a Mii’s face into 6 editable regions:

  1. Left cheek
  2. Right cheek
  3. Forehead
  4. Nose bridge
  5. Chin
  6. Eye area

Each region has its own independent canvas. You can paint on multiple regions simultaneously, but each region’s palette and brush settings are tracked separately.

Tools

The face paint editor has 5 tools:

  • Brush — 3 sizes, 3 opacities, soft/hard edge toggle
  • Stamp — 40+ included designs (stars, hearts, flowers, etc.)
  • Fill — flood-fill the selected region with one color
  • Pattern overlay — apply one of 20+ texture patterns (subtle, won’t overwhelm)
  • Eraser — clear the region to base skin tone

Color palette is restricted to 3 swatches per region, similar to the Creative Workshop clothing editor. You can swap the 3 swatches at any time by tapping the palette button.

Brush mechanics

The brush tool is more nuanced than it first appears. The key settings:

  • Size (Small/Medium/Large) — affects coverage area
  • Opacity (Light/Medium/Strong) — affects color blending with base skin tone
  • Edge (Soft/Hard) — affects how the brush stroke fades out

A common mistake is using Strong opacity for everything. Strong opacity on skin-tone colors produces a “painted-on doll” look. For most designs, Medium opacity with Soft edge gives the most natural result.

Blending modes

This is the secret to professional-looking face paint. The editor has 3 blending modes:

  • Normal — standard overlay (default)
  • Multiply — darkens the base skin tone in the painted area
  • Screen — lightens the base skin tone in the painted area

For natural blush effects, use Multiply mode with a pink/red swatch on the cheeks. For highlighting (under-eye bags, scars, age spots), use Screen mode with a yellow/white swatch.

Color theory for skin tones

The biggest design challenge in face paint is choosing colors that look right on a Mii’s base skin tone. The game has 12 base skin tones, from very pale to very dark. A color that looks great on pale skin can look muddy on dark skin.

The safe approach:

  • Cheek blush: pink or coral, works on all 12 skin tones
  • Eye makeup: brown, gold, or navy — works on all 12
  • Forehead decoration: white or yellow — works on all 12
  • Avoid: pure black on dark skin tones (looks like dirt); pure white on pale skin tones (washes out)

Safe design patterns

Like the Creative Workshop, face paint designs are subject to the IP-report system. Designs that look like recognizable logos, anime characters, or brand mascots will get flagged.

The safe design space:

  • Natural-looking makeup (blush, eyeshadow, lipstick, age lines)
  • Abstract patterns (geometric, dots, lines, gradients)
  • Subtle markings (small moles, freckles, beauty marks)

The unsafe design space:

  • Logos of real brands (even single-letter ones)
  • Recognizable character faces (Mickey Mouse silhouette, anime eyes, etc.)
  • Brand-style iconography (crowns, lightning bolts in specific brand colors)

Step-by-step: a natural blush effect

Here’s a quick walkthrough of the most common face paint design — natural cheek blush. It works on any Mii.

  1. Select the Left cheek region.
  2. Open the palette, set 3 swatches: pink #F5A8B0, coral #FF8B6A, soft red #C75B5B.
  3. Set brush to Medium size, Strong opacity, Soft edge, Multiply blending mode.
  4. Paint a small oval on the cheek, roughly the size of a strawberry.
  5. Switch to Light opacity for a second pass — adds depth.
  6. Repeat for the Right cheek (mirror).
  7. Save the design.

This design takes about 90 seconds to complete and looks natural on all 12 base skin tones.

Common issues and fixes

”My brush strokes look pixelated”

You’re using Small size with Hard edge. Switch to Medium size with Soft edge and the strokes will blend more naturally.

”The 3-color limit feels restrictive”

Use pattern overlay with two-tone patterns. The pattern counts as one swatch slot but adds visual complexity. The 20 included patterns cover most design needs.

”The face paint doesn’t show up in screenshots”

You’re in a region that’s hidden by hair. Open the editor, toggle the “show all regions” preview button at the top, and confirm the design is being applied to the right face areas.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I copy a face paint design to multiple Miis? A: Yes. Open the design on one Mii, tap the “Apply to Others” button, and select up to 8 Miis from the picker. The design is copied exactly.

Q: Does face paint affect romance compatibility? A: No. Face paint is purely cosmetic and has no gameplay effect.

Q: Can I import face paint designs from .miic files? A: Yes, the format is the same as clothing designs. A clothing .miic only loads the clothing parts, a face paint .miic only loads the face parts.

Q: Is there a way to undo a brush stroke? A: Tap the back-arrow in the top-left of the editor. Each undo goes back one stroke, up to 50 strokes deep.
