Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Beginner's Complete Walkthrough
Everything a new player should do in the first two hours: which menus to open, which buildings to prioritize, and which mistakes to avoid on day one.
Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). All references below describe the in-game menus as labelled in the English release. Menus in other regions may differ.
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream opens with the player acting as the new “Island Caretaker” of a deserted island. The first two hours are unusually busy: you create your first batch of Miis, choose what facilities to build, and meet the cast of recurring NPCs that hand out daily quests. This guide walks you through every screen you will see on day one and explains the order in which to do things so that nothing important gets buried under a backlog of unmet requests.
The single biggest mistake new players make is trying to “speedrun” the opening by cramming the island full of Miis on day one. The game is designed so that buildings and residents both unlock in waves, and pushing too hard too early means the game has nothing new to give you. The walkthrough below is paced for a relaxed first evening — about 90 minutes of active play, plus idle time while residents sleep.
What you should know before starting
- Save data is per-profile. Each Switch profile has its own island. If you share a console with family, pick the right profile before you launch the game — there is no in-game “switch user” option.
- The opening cinematic cannot be skipped. Set aside roughly 5 minutes for the first cutscene. It introduces the four recurring NPCs you will see on every island (the photographer, the grocer, the fortune teller, the stylist).
- You can revisit any menu. Nothing you do in the first hour is permanent. If you don’t like a Mii’s voice after the first day, you can change it.
Step 1: Pick your starter personality and starter island name
The very first prompt asks you to name the island. Pick a name you can live with for the entire playthrough — there’s no rename later without a full restart.
After the island name, the game asks for your own Mii (the caretaker). This Mii becomes a permanent resident of your island, so spend a few minutes on it. Things you might want to set:
- Personality archetype (Confident, Easygoing, Independent, Energetic, etc.) — affects dialogue flavor for the whole playthrough, can be changed later but is mildly expensive.
- Pronouns and family relations — set these even if you intend to play as yourself; the game uses them in scripted cutscenes.
- Birthday — affects the seasonal events your island will celebrate.

Step 2: Create your first 4 Miis (not 8, not 12)
The opening tutorial will let you create up to 8 Miis in one go. Don’t. Create exactly 4 to start with. Here’s why:
- The first three buildings (Comfort Residence A, the Apartment Tower, and the Plaza Shop) only unlock after the 4th, 6th, and 8th resident arrive.
- If you create all 8 in one batch, you will skip the “first new arrival” celebration each time.
- The game only gives you the Beginner Gift Box (3,000 coins, 1 food item, 1 clothing item) on the first four Miis you create.
The recommended order is: two close friends of the caretaker, one parent figure, and one wildcard. This gives you variety in relationship types early on.
Step 3: Visit the Plaza Shop before going anywhere else
The Plaza Shop is the building in the center of the island. It’s where you spend coins on:
- Food (5–80 coins each, restores hunger)
- Clothing (30–500 coins, used in Creative Workshop)
- Furniture (100–800 coins, used in resident apartments)
- Toys (40–300 coins, used in the Park)
The very first thing to buy is the Convenience Bag (120 coins). It lets you carry 12 food items instead of 6, which makes the next 30 minutes of gameplay noticeably smoother.
Step 4: Trigger your first Wish Event
Every resident has a “current wish” at any given time. The wish indicator is a small icon above their head — speech bubble, heart, food bowl, etc. Fulfilling wishes earns the Happiness meter, which is the currency for unlocking new buildings.
To trigger your first wish event:
- Wait until a resident has the speech-bubble icon.
- Tap them, choose Listen, then pick a dialogue option from the top three (these are tagged as “good” responses).
- The resident will reward you with 50–200 coins and a small happiness boost.
Repeat this for all four starter Miis before moving on. By the time you finish, you should have around 2,500 coins and a happiness score north of 60.
Step 5: Build the Photographer’s Studio (free, mandatory)
After the 4th resident arrives, you get a free building placement choice. Always pick the Photographer’s Studio first. It’s the only building that lets you save snapshots of Mii interactions — those snapshots are how you build a backlog of memorable moments to share later.
The Photographer NPC also runs a daily mini-game (pose-matching) that gives 100 coins per correct guess. This is your most reliable income stream for the first week.
Step 6: Let the day end
After about 90 minutes of real time, the in-game clock will roll over to night. Don’t stay up to grind. Let your Miis go to sleep. During sleep:
- Their happiness slowly regenerates.
- Their relationship meters (Friendship, Romance) tick upward if paired with a compatible roommate.
- The game saves automatically.
A common rookie mistake is to play past 2 AM in real time. The game has a 24-hour “energy” timer for the player character that caps how much you can do per real day. Don’t fight it.
Common issues and fixes
”The wish icon never appears”
If you’ve played for 30 minutes and no resident shows a wish, you probably haven’t spoken to them enough. Each Mii has a hidden “interaction quota” of about 5 conversations before the wish engine activates. Talk to them, give them a food item once, and the icon will appear.
”I created 8 Miis and now everything is overwhelming”
You can soft-restart by deleting the last 4 Miis from the resident menu. There’s no penalty. Their apartments will be demolished but the materials are refunded.
”The Plaza Shop is sold out of everything”
The shop’s inventory rotates every 4 in-game hours. If you see a food item you want, buy it. Don’t assume it’ll be back next cycle — sometimes an item is out of rotation for 2–3 real days.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Should I focus on Friendship or Romance first? A: Romance is the more rewarding system, but it requires more setup (matching personality archetypes, ensuring compatible roommates). Friendship is the safer choice for a first-day player.
Q: Can I rename the island later? A: No. The only way to “rename” is to start a new profile. Plan accordingly.
Q: Do I need to play every day? A: No. The game has an offline-friendly “Energy Catch-Up” mechanic: if you skip a day, the next session gives you a small bonus to compensate.
Q: Can I have more than one island? A: One island per profile. If you want a second island, use a second Switch profile (or play on a second Switch).
