Recommended day-1 settings

The configuration we run on this device before benchmarking.

TDP
12-15 W
Resolution
1280×800 native
Frame rate
40 fps (battery) / 60 fps (plugged)
Audio
Built-in speakers (volume 70%+); no DSP needed for typical games

Start at 12W TDP + 40 fps cap for new games. Raise to 15W only if frametime is unstable. The OLED's 90 Hz panel is worth the $150 upgrade for AAA / visual-heavy titles; for indies / pixel art, the LCD holds up fine.

Known issues

What we ran into while testing, and what to do about it.

  • FYI

OLED model: faint ghost image on static UI elements after 200+ hours

The status bar, library tiles, and on-screen keyboard leave faint retention marks at very high cumulative screen-on hours. Not visible during normal play.

Fix: SteamOS 3.6+ runs a 5-minute pixel refresh every 4 hours when the device is plugged in; let it sleep fully overnight to clear.

  • Workaround

Fan audible under sustained 15W TDP load

Demanding AAA games at 15W TDP spin the fan to ~45 dB at 30 cm. Quiet-room audible during long sessions.

Fix: Cap TDP at 12W (battery) / 13W (plugged) for AAA; most games still hold 40 fps with the cap.
