Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Island Building, Layouts & Town Beautification

Layout principles for a beautiful and functional island: building spacing, road networks, decoration economy, and the beautification score system.

Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). Layout principles and beautification scores verified on a 16-resident island.

Living the Dream’s island editor is a simplified town planner. You can place 28 buildings, lay down roads, drop decorations, and reshape the coastline. There’s no zoning system or tax model — just a visual placement grid with a hidden “beautification score” that affects happiness meter growth.

This guide covers the layout principles that produce a beautiful, functional island without spending hours fussing over pixel-perfect placement. The biggest mistake new players make is to fill every empty space with a building or decoration. Negative space is part of the design.

The grid

The island is a 32×32 grid. Each cell is about 1 unit of Mii scale (a Mii is roughly 2×2 cells when standing). Buildings occupy between 2×2 and 6×6 cells.

The grid is fixed — you can’t expand the island by spending coins. Once you fill all 1,024 cells, you’re done placing things.

Layer order (bottom to top)

There are 4 layers, drawn in this order:

  1. Terrain — grass, sand, water. You can edit this with the coastline tool and the elevation tool.
  2. Roads — straight and curved path tiles, plus intersections.
  3. Buildings — the 28 main structures.
  4. Decorations — plants, benches, lamps, signs, and other small items.

You can move items between layers only by deleting and re-placing. The editor doesn’t let you drag a building onto the terrain layer.

Beautification score

The beautification score (0–1000) is a hidden aggregate. It rises when:

  • Buildings are spaced at least 1 cell apart from each other
  • Roads connect at least 3 buildings
  • Decorations are clustered (3+ in a 3×3 area)
  • Terrain has variety (mix of grass, sand, water — not 100% one type)

It falls when:

  • Buildings are crammed together (no spacing)
  • Roads are dead-ends or fragmented
  • Decorations are scattered randomly
  • Terrain is monotone

The beautification score has a soft effect on happiness meter growth: at score 800+, happiness meter grows 30% faster. At score 200 or below, happiness meter grows 30% slower.

Layout principles

Principle 1: Zone by function

Group buildings by purpose. The recommended zoning:

  • Residential zone: Apartment Towers + Tower Suite (north side)
  • Commercial zone: Plaza Shop + Café + Photo Studio + Clothing Boutique (center)
  • Recreation zone: Park + Concert Hall + Hot Spring + Beach House (south side)
  • Service zone: Town Hall + Travel Agency + Wedding Chapel (east side)

This produces a clear “downtown” feel and makes navigation intuitive for new residents.

Principle 2: Use roads sparingly

A common mistake is to lay down a full road network connecting every building. This eats grid space without much beautification benefit. The optimal pattern is a single main road that loops around the island center, with 2–3 short spurs to side buildings.

A single-loop road layout typically uses 60–80 road tiles. A full grid network uses 200+ tiles and offers minimal additional beautification.

Principle 3: Decorate clusters

The beautification score rewards clusters of 3+ decorations in a 3×3 area. Spread-out decorations barely contribute. Place decorations in clusters:

  • Plaza area: 4 benches + 3 lamps + 2 flower planters = 9 decorations clustered
  • Park area: 6 trees + 2 benches + 1 fountain = 9 decorations clustered
  • Beach area: 4 beach umbrellas + 2 towels + 1 cooler = 7 decorations clustered

Principle 4: Vary the terrain

Monotone terrain (all grass) reduces beautification. The coastline tool lets you draw beach edges, and the elevation tool lets you add small hills. Aim for:

  • 40% grass (interior)
  • 20% sand (beach edges)
  • 20% water (ocean + small pond)
  • 15% elevated (1–2 hills)
  • 5% paved (plaza area)

This gives the island a varied silhouette and improves the beautification score significantly.

Building placement tips

  • Plaza Shop must be in the geometric center of the island. It triggers daily events that affect all Miis, so central placement minimizes walking time.
  • Photo Studio should be near the Park. The pose-game runs on a 6-hour cycle, so placing it far from where your Miis hang out wastes their walking energy.
  • Wedding Chapel should be near the Tower Suite. After ceremonies, the married couple will walk back to their apartment, and a long walk back ruins the moment.
  • Town Hall should be near a road entrance. It’s the building new residents visit first when they arrive on the island.

Common issues and fixes

”I placed too many decorations and now I’m out of grid space”

Decorations can be deleted. The Plaza Shop sells “Decoration Removal” for 50 coins per item, or you can delete them directly in the editor (Settings → Remove Mode).

”My roads aren’t connecting to anything”

The road tool has 3 modes: straight, curved, intersection. Make sure you’re using intersections at the right points. A “stub” road that’s not connected to a building reduces beautification.

”The beautification score isn’t moving”

It only updates when you exit the editor and re-enter. There’s no real-time score display.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I move a building after it’s placed? A: Yes, but it costs 200 coins. The building teleports to the new location with no animation.

Q: Does the beautification score affect anything besides happiness? A: Yes — it also affects which ending cinematic you get. Score ≥ 800 unlocks the “Golden Island” ending. Score < 200 unlocks the “Stormy Island” ending. Other scores get the standard ending.

Q: Can I share my island layout? A: Yes, via the Island Snapshot feature in Town Hall. It exports a .miimap file that other players can import.

Q: Is there a way to reset the island without restarting? A: Yes, Settings → Reset Island. This wipes all buildings, decorations, and roads, but keeps your Miis. The terrain is preserved.
