Freshness Forbidden Rites is the 0.5.5 event-league cycle launching 2026-09-04 PDT and running through 2026-12-11 (~14 weeks) ahead of the 1.0 full release. Article verified against the official pathofexile.com forum announcement (Sep 4, 2026), the consolidated 0.5.5 patch notes thread, re-verified 2026-09-08 (Day 5) for the event-league duration FAQ and Duelist class timing, and updated 2026-09-10 (Day 7) for the 9/7 hotfix that fixed the Trial of Chaos Ascendancy-Points exploit, Manor Ramparts entrance, eight stability crashes, and Ocean Biome Expeditions.
Dark-fantasy atmosphere at twilight — jagged purple mountain silhouettes and a spiked fortress on a hill at the centre, scattered golden rune particles floating in the air, subtle ember glow rising from below the horizon. Painterly but photorealistic, moody, no characters, no logos.

TL;DR: Path of Exile 2’s 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites patch went live on September 4, 2026 (1:00 PM PDT). The new event league centres on Ritual encounters in the campaign with a fresh economy, Trial of Chaos finally gets a resume-runs + per-room rewards rework, 17 new Soul Cores open build diversity, Expedition moves into the core game from Act 4 onwards, and the Atlas gets Abyssal Ravines plus a faster Fortress shortcut to Atlas Passive Points. Existing players keep Runes of Aldur running in parallel. Plus a Twitch Drop pet for the first week. Day 5 update (Sep 8): the league runs ~14 weeks to the December 11, 2026 1.0 release, not one month — and the Duelist class ships at 1.0, not in 0.5.5.

Who this is for

  • POE 2 players planning their Forbidden Rites league start (starter build, race strategy)
  • Players deciding between rolling a new character in Forbidden Rites vs finishing Runes of Aldur
  • Anyone who keeps searching “POE 2 0.5.5” and wants the official answer in one place
  • Build-theorycrafters looking at the 17 new Soul Cores for buff potential

This is a patch notes + starter guide post, verified against the official pathofexile.com forum announcement on 2026-09-04 and the consolidated 0.5.5 patch notes thread.

1. What is 0.5.5 — and what isn’t

POE 2 patch 0.5.5 is the third numbered update of the Early Access cycle and the first to ship a true event league. The internal name is Forbidden Rites, the marketing name is Path of Exile 2: Forbidden Rites.

Unlike the older Path of Exile 1 cycle (which uses 3.29.x version numbers), POE 2 EA patches are numbered with the 0.x prefix. 0.5.5 therefore sits between the August 0.5.x content patch (Curse of the Allflame) and the autumn 1.0 release. Search engines have been auto-completing “poe 2 0.5.5” since late August — the answer is this patch.

2. The Forbidden Rites event league

The King in the Mists and the Nameless have spread dark Rituals across every campaign area. The mechanic is straightforward:

  1. Clear enemies guarding a Ritual effigy in any zone.
  2. Activate the effigy to resurrect the slain monsters as a tougher wave.
  3. Defeat the wave to earn Tribute.
  4. Each party member earns their own Tribute pool now — no more fighting over a shared reward.

Two new twists land in 0.5.5:

  • Boss Ritual clusters appear on the World Map, twice per Act and once per Interlude. Each is tied to an area boss. Defeat the boss Ritual and the boss is carried forward into the next Ritual, building an escalating chain of boss fights. Completing the full chain lets you spend accumulated Tribute on unique items.
  • Eight league challenges unlock four exclusive cosmetics: Locust Footprints, Locust Swarm Rare Finisher Effect, Wildwood Guardian Pet, and Wildwood Affliction Level-up Effect. Plus a commemorative Hideout Statue.

The league supports Standard, Hardcore, and Solo Self-Found variants. Hardcore deaths transfer the character to Standard Forbidden Rites (same as the previous EA cycle).

3. Trial of Chaos rework — the biggest QoL fix in the patch

Trial of Chaos (the Ultimatum endgame activity) was the most-criticised piece of POE 2 EA. 0.5.5 ships a substantial rework:

ChangeWhat it means
Run resumeLeave a Trial at any time and resume from the same room later. Forced all-or-nothing runs are gone.
Per-room reward chestEach room now ends with a reward chest. Die mid-run and you still bank the rewards from completed rooms.
30-room scalingTrials can stretch up to 30 rooms, with difficulty and rewards scaling as you go deeper.
All three Trialmaster Fragments in one runReaching the late rooms lets you collect all three Fragments in a single run, instead of needing multiple attempts.
Inherent area bonusesTrials now have base Magic/Rare monster chance, Pack Size, and Item Quality bonuses to compensate for missing Atlas passives.
Cleaner modifier textWager Modifier descriptions now show explicit numeric values rather than vague flavour text.
Faster transitionsEncounter doors and elevators are redesigned for snappier movement between rooms. Trialmaster time-stops fire less often.
Rewards pool narrowedRuns now reward Currency and Soul Cores exclusively — corrupted items are removed from the pool.

This is the change that will pull former Trial-of-Chaos sceptics back into the activity.

4. The 17 new Soul Cores

Augments receive the largest batch. New entries span three classes:

Jiquani Soul Cores (13): Automation, Malediction, Targeting, Rallying, Radiance, Severing, Rippling, Quaking, Munitions, Snares, Abundance, Squalls, Thundering.

Atziri Soul Cores (4): Devotion, Vitality, Alacrity, Inoculation.

Map Fragments (1): Sacred Bloom — opens the Viridian Wildwood on a chosen Atlas Map.

Tablets (1): Expedition Tablet — stacks to enhance Expedition encounters.

Most existing Soul Cores also received buffs to ailment magnitude, maximum resistances, and life/mana recovery. Custom item-filter users will need to add the new names to their filters so the icons display correctly.

5. Expedition goes core — what changes for you

Runes of Aldur’s Expedition mechanic is now part of the core game from Act 4 onwards, available in Standard and every future league. Practical implications:

  • Farrow, Dannig, and Runeseeker quest lines unlock the Verisium Anvil at Act 4 for every character.
  • Expedition Tablets stack for enhanced map effects: more Expedition encounters, more bosses, unique sentry spawns.
  • Expedition unique items now support the dedicated unique stash tab in all game modes.
  • Existing Runes of Aldur characters keep their league progress; you can finish the old ladder or reroll into Forbidden Rites without losing anything.

If you never touched Expedition in Runes of Aldur, this is the cleanest entry point — the content is no longer time-limited.

6. Atlas changes — faster progression and Abyssal Ravines

Two big Atlas improvements ship in 0.5.5:

Faster Atlas progression via the Fortress shortcut. After finishing the main questline, you can seek out a second Arbiter of Divinity key. Beat the tougher Arbiter that uses it, and the entire remaining Fortress automatically completes. All the Atlas Passive Points drop in one go — no more gating the early Atlas behind a multi-session grind.

Abyssal Ravines. New chain map layouts appear on the Atlas. Each map in the ravine contains Abysses, and rewards scale as you push back the Abyssal Legion. The final map in the chain guarantees an Abyssal boss. Great for atlas completion and targeted Abyss loot.

Other Atlas-adjacent changes:

  • Delirium fog spread and monster pack scaling are capped at 100% intensity (down from previous infinite scaling) — better performance and clearer build-scaling breakpoints.
  • Breach and Abyss monster spawn rates rebalanced for smoother clear.
  • Corrupted Nexus maps support retry mechanics for failed runs.
  • Major endgame bosses (Arbiter of Ash, Arbiter of Divinity, Omniphobia) lose their blanket elemental resistance immunities — they now have specific vulnerabilities, rewarding strategic build crafting instead of stacking one element.

7. Currency Exchange and UI polish

  • Currency Exchange UI now has a Stash / Inventory toggle for faster trades.
  • Trade house filters load faster with large inventories.
  • Minimap recolouring for league mechanics (Ritual, Expedition, Abyss, Delirium) is now consistent across all leagues.

8. Starter build picks for Forbidden Rites

Ritual is now a campaign-side mechanic, so starter builds that clear fast and survive boss-waves are favoured. Three picks that historically scale well into the new economy:

  1. Lightning Arrow Deadeye — same as the EA meta pick. Fast clear, range safety, and Volatility support scales the damage into maps. Best for SSF players who want to learn the league from scratch.
  2. Cold Snap Occultist — strong against the new boss-Ritual chains because Cold Snap’s chill lets you kite boss waves. Good mapper once you spec into Frostbolts.
  3. Lightning Conduit Elementalist — already strong in Runes of Aldur, and the new Soul Core buffs (especially Jiquani’s Soul Core of Thundering) push shock scaling further. Best if you want to play the meta.

Avoid Minion builds at launch until the new Soul Core interactions settle — Cold Symmetry-equivalent GGG patches often introduce Minion-affecting bugs that take a hotfix to clean up.

9. Release timing and patch sizes

RegionRealm downtimeServers livePatch size
NA / EU / Asia2026-09-05 02:00 GMT+8 (2026-09-04 13:00 PDT)2026-09-05 04:00 GMT+8PC 17 GB / Console 12 GB

Existing PC players can grab a 140 GB torrent predownload (includes all existing client content), but it must be copied into the install folder manually and is incompatible with Steam and Epic. Console predownloads work through the normal storefront flow.

10. The Twitch Drop window

The Blade of the Champion Pet is the launch Twitch Drop:

  • Window: 2026-09-04 13:00 PDT → 2026-09-11 13:00 PDT.
  • Requirement: 2 hours of cumulative watch time on any channel in the official PoE 2 Twitch directory.
  • How to redeem: Link your PoE account to Twitch under Settings → Other Connections → Connect, then claim the reward in your Twitch Inventory before the window closes.
  • Exclusivity: The pet is not exclusive to Twitch Drops — it will later be sold in the microtransaction store and will also be made available in Path of Exile 1.

11. Should you play Forbidden Rites or stay in Runes of Aldur?

Both are running in parallel. Quick decision rule:

  • Roll a Forbidden Rites character if you want the fresh economy, the new Ritual mechanic, the Wildwood (via Sacred Bloom), and the eight exclusive challenge rewards.
  • Stay in Runes of Aldur if you’re mid-league grinding Atlas points, you want to finish the existing Runes of Aldur challenge ladder, or you want to skip the launch-week queue.
  • SSF players: the SSF Forbidden Rites economy is the cleanest it’s been in POE 2 EA — Ritual now drops throughout the campaign, so SSF characters get crafting currency at a sane rate for the first time.

12. What’s next — looking past 0.5.5 toward 1.0

GGG has not announced the next patch number, but the EA roadmap sketched at Gamescom 2026 lines up roughly as:

  • 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites (Sep 4, 2026) — runs through Dec 11, 2026this patch
  • 0.6.x (autumn 2026, before 1.0) — endgame balancing and seasonal polish
  • 1.0 full release (December 11, 2026, per the Gamescom reveal) — campaign complete, full class roster (including Duelist), no Early Access tag

No balance changes are planned for 0.5.5 itself — every existing starter build guide written for Runes of Aldur remains viable. The new Soul Cores and Sacred Bloom give you more options, not a forced reroll. Note the Duelist class is reserved for 1.0 — do not expect Duelist coverage in the 0.5.5 → 0.6.x window.

13. Day 5 update — Sep 8, 2026

Five days into the league, the picture has stabilised:

  • Economy has settled. Tribute → chaos rates are tracking the pre-launch projections; Sacred Blooms are at a sustainable price on the trade site; high-tier unique drops from boss-Ritual chains are flowing into the market within 48 hours of the kill.
  • Starter builds are confirmed. Lightning Arrow Deadeye, Cold Snap Occultist, and Lightning Conduit Elementalist remain the three cleanest league starters on the SSF and trade ladders. Minion builds are still working through the new Soul Core interaction bugs — wait until at least hotfix 0.5.5b before committing to a minion league start.
  • Trial of Chaos rework is the patch’s win. Resume runs + per-room rewards have cut average clear time per Fragment from a session to roughly an hour. Most of the playerbase’s complaints about Ultimatum endgame have flipped positive.
  • Weekend 12-challenge push begins. Players targeting the eight-league-challenge ladder should focus Sacred Bloom / Atlas chains on Friday-Sunday. The first 8-challenge reward (Locust Footprints) is realistically within two weekends of moderate play.
  • The headline correction from Day 5: this is a 14-week league, not a one-month sprint. Plan Atlas nodes, character levelling, and challenge ladder progress on a multi-month cycle. If you pace yourself, you can comfortably finish the full 8-challenge set, the league-only cosmetics, and one full Atlas reset before 1.0 lands.

We will continue to update this post through 1.0 with hotfix notes, balance adjustments, and the next round of Soul Core buffs as they land.

14. Day 7 update — 0.5.5 hotfix, Sep 7, 2026

Three days into the league, GGG pushed the first Day 3 hotfix (2026-09-07) — the first integrity pass over the 0.5.5 cycle. The headline is the Trial of Chaos reward-exploit fix; the rest is stability and quality-of-life.

14.1 Trial of Chaos — Ascendancy Points reward-exploit closed

The biggest issue was a Trial of Chaos exploit where players could secure Ascendancy Points even when they were not present at the boss death. The hotfix tightens the rule: Ascendancy Points now drop only when the player who owns the run is present at the boss kill. Players who AFK’d the boss phase and then entered the chamber for the loot chest no longer qualify. This matters because Ascendancy Points are the single biggest character-power gate in POE 2 — losing two Ascendancy Points over a 14-week league is a build-defining setback. GGG’s integrity stance is correct here, and the patch keeps the rest of the per-room reward chest system intact.

14.2 Manor Ramparts entrance restored

The 0.5.5 patch broke the Manor Ramparts map entrance after the Leitis liberation cutscene. Players could clear the cutscene and then find the entrance tile missing or non-interactive, blocking progress into the next Act content. The hotfix restores the entrance trigger so Leitis-liberated characters can advance as intended.

14.3 Stability — 4 client + 4 instance crashes fixed

Eight stability bugs landed in 0.5.5 (four client-side crashes + four instance crashes — instanced content like the Trial of Chaos, Expedition, and Abyssal Ravines). The hotfix collapses all eight. After the patch, average session stability is back to the pre-patch baseline — most of the crash reports were clustered in Trial of Chaos rooms 12-20 and the Ocean Biome Expedition.

14.4 Ocean Biome Expeditions — three-site bug fixed

Ocean Biome Expeditions had a bug where Expedition Tablets could spawn three Expedition sites in a single map instead of the expected one or two. The extra sites were mostly harmless loot bonus, but they broke the tablet-stacking economy and could cause performance hitches. The hotfix caps the roll at the intended maximum (two sites per tablet, scaling with tablet modifiers) and the Expedition Tablet stacking balance from §5 of this post holds.

14.5 Ritual Encounters — Great White One fin animation

The Great White One (one of the new Ritual boss variants tied to the Wildwood content) had a broken fin animation — the kill-cam would clip through the model or freeze for a frame, which broke the cosmetic flex of finishing a high-tier Ritual. The hotfix restores the full fin animation; expect cleaner kill-cam clips in highlight reels.

14.6 Trial of Chaos Wager Modifiers — initial strength toned down

Several Trial of Chaos Wager Modifiers shipped with initial strength values that were tuned for the pre-launch testing population and felt punishing for the launch-day population. The hotfix trims the initial strength of the defensive Wager Modifiers (armour / resistances / regen lines) and brings them closer to the standard league-wide balance. Offence-side modifiers (damage / extra projectiles / chain) are unchanged — the issue was defensive pressure, not damage scaling.

14.7 What the hotfix did not touch

  • No balance changes to Ritual Tribute economy, Sacred Bloom drop rates, or Soul Core interaction tuning. The 0.5.5 numbers stay.
  • No new Atlas content — the Abyssal Ravines chain still caps at the published boss, and the Fortress shortcut still grants all Atlas Passive Points in one go.
  • No build-side nerfs or buffs — starter builds from §8 of this post remain the cleanest league starts. Minion builds still need a 0.5.5b to settle Soul Core interactions; the Day 3 hotfix did not address those.
  • No Duelist content — the class still ships at 1.0 on 2026-12-11.

14.8 Patch cadence through 1.0

With the Forbidden Rites cycle running ~14 weeks to the 2026-12-11 1.0 release, expect:

  • Weekly or bi-weekly hotfixes through October for stability, exploit closures, and minor balance.
  • A larger 0.6.x balance pass in November ahead of 1.0 — this is where the Soul Core interaction issues, Minion balance, and any Ritual / Trial of Chaos economy concerns will be addressed at scale.
  • A final 0.6.x → 1.0 transition patch in early December — class roster locked, campaign complete, no Early Access tag.

We will keep this post updated through the cycle with each hotfix recap. The next patch note to watch is the 0.5.5b — likely a small follow-up to this hotfix targeting the Minion + Soul Core interaction bugs still in flight.
