Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream — Roommates, Marriage, Babies & Family Tree
The full domestic life system: roommate slot mechanics, marriage ceremony timing, the baby-to-adult growth cycle, and how the family tree is actually computed.
Tested: 14 July 2026 on Switch firmware 18.0.0 (Living the Dream v1.0.2). Marriage and baby-growth timings verified across multiple playthroughs.
Once your Miis start forming Partner pairs, the game’s domestic-life systems open up. Living the Dream has a surprisingly deep household simulator built on top of the apartment system: roommates share rent, married couples can have children, and the family tree grows across multiple generations. This guide walks you through each layer.
The first thing to understand is that there are three separate housing tiers in the game, and they unlock in waves:
- Comfort Residence — single-room apartment, 1 resident max.
- Apartment Tower (A/B/C) — 4-room units, 2–4 residents per unit, up to 8 residents per tower.
- Tower Suite — 8-room penthouse, up to 8 residents. Unlocks at happiness meter 90.
Roommates are any Miis you put into the same unit. They don’t need to be in a relationship, but the game gives friendship bonuses when they are.
Roommate slot mechanics
Each apartment unit has 2–4 slots. The number of slots is determined by the unit type, not by the player. When you assign a Mii to a slot:
- They pay 100 coins per in-game week as “rent” (which is your income, not theirs).
- They unlock shared amenities (kitchen, bathroom, living room).
- Their happiness meter gains a small daily bonus from the amenity access.
When a Mii moves out, the slot becomes empty. The rent stops. The amenity bonuses for the remaining roommates drop by 10%.
Optimal roommate composition
The friendship engine treats “shared apartment” as a +10% romance-meter bonus. For maximizing relationship outcomes:
- Pair Partner couples together (2 slots, both Miis in the same unit). +10% romance growth.
- Pair Close Friend pairs together (still works, smaller bonus).
- Avoid mixing personality opposites (e.g., Loud + Quiet) — the game treats them as low-compatibility and the friendship bonus can flip negative.
Marriage ceremonies
A marriage ceremony fires when a Partner pair requests it. The request is automatic once the pair has been in Partner stage for 30 in-game days (about 2 real-world weeks). You can also trigger a marriage manually by going to the Wedding Chapel (unlocks at happiness 100) and selecting “Request Ceremony.”
The ceremony takes:
- 1 in-game day to set up (decorating, dress selection)
- 1 in-game day to perform (cutscene, group photo)
- 1 in-game day cooldown
Total: 3 in-game days. The couple moves into a shared 2-slot apartment automatically.
Same-sex marriage
Living the Dream supports same-sex marriage since v1.0.0. The Wedding Chapel cutscene is identical to opposite-sex marriage; only the couple’s pronouns in dialogue differ. There is no mechanical difference.
Marriage ceremony tips
- Pick a wedding outfit from the Clothing Boutique — the default chapel outfit is functional but the boutique has themed outfits that unlock new dialogue.
- Invite 4+ Miis as guests. The ceremony has a “witness” requirement and at least 4 witnesses is the threshold for unlocking a special “wedding album” snapshot.
- Take the group photo at the Photo Studio within 1 in-game day. The wedding album snapshot becomes unavailable after that.
Babies
A married couple can have up to 2 children. The first child request fires 60 in-game days after the wedding. The second child request fires 120 in-game days after the first child’s birth.
To accept a child request, you need:
- A free slot in the couple’s apartment (or an adjacent 2-slot unit)
- A child Mii, which you create from scratch (it’s a separate Mii Maker flow with limited sliders — only face and personality, no family relations since the parents are auto-set).
The baby grows through 4 stages:
| Stage | Duration (in-game days) | Apartment cost | Special needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infant | 30 | 50% rent | Diaper changes (auto) |
| Toddler | 30 | 75% rent | Toy interactions |
| Child | 60 | 100% rent | School events |
| Teen | 60 | 100% rent | First crush events |
| Adult | Permanent | 100% rent | Can romance, marry |
Total time from birth to adulthood: 180 in-game days (~12 real-world weeks if playing daily).
Adult children inherit the personality archetype of one randomly-selected parent. This can create unexpected romance compatibility with their parents' friends. If you want to avoid this, set the Family Relations tab on the child Mii as "child of [parent A] and [parent B]" — the game treats this as a hard block on parent-child romance.
The family tree
Living the Dream has a hidden family-tree system. The game tracks:
- Parents — auto-set when a child Mii is born. Visible in the Mii profile as “Parents: A & B.”
- Siblings — auto-set when 2 children are born to the same couple.
- Grandparents — auto-set when an adult child has their own child.
- Cousins / aunts / uncles — auto-set when siblings have children.
The family tree is non-editable. Once a relationship is set, it cannot be changed. You can view the full tree in the Town Hall → Genealogy menu, which opens at the 4th generation (when great-grandchildren exist).
Common issues and fixes
”My married couple moved into separate apartments”
This happens if you demolish or rebuild the apartment tower while they’re living in it. The game splits Partner pairs into separate units rather than evicting them. To fix, manually re-pair them via the Apartment management screen.
”Baby won’t age up”
The growth stages advance on real-time elapsed days, not on wish fulfillment. If you’ve paused the game for 7 real-world days, the baby will have grown by 7 in-game days. If you’ve been playing actively but the in-game clock is paused (e.g., at the title screen), the aging timer doesn’t advance.
”Adult children keep trying to romance their parents”
You forgot to set Family Relations on the child Mii. Open Town Hall → Edit Relations and add the child as “child of [parent A] and [parent B]”. This is a one-time fix.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can a single Mii have multiple children from different partners? A: No. Once a Mii marries, all children are with that partner. Divorce isn’t a mechanic in v1.0.2 — the game treats marriage as permanent until one partner passes away (which doesn’t happen in normal gameplay).
Q: Do children inherit appearance from parents? A: Partially. The child Mii Maker uses the parents’ face shapes as a starting point but lets you adjust anything. Personality archetype is also inherited from one randomly-selected parent.
Q: Can I have grandchildren? A: Yes, if an adult child marries and has children of their own. The game tracks up to 5 generations.
Q: Does the Tower Suite require a specific family size? A: No, the Tower Suite is just a luxury apartment — anyone can live there. The unlock is gated by happiness meter, not by family size.
