Subnautica 2 — Main Story Walkthrough: NOA, Black Boxes, and Precursor Sites
A spoiler-light walkthrough of the early-access main story arc: activating NOA, finding the first camp, the black box signal network, the precursor sites, and what EA leaves unfinished.
Tested against: Subnautica 2 early-access build available at the time of writing. Story objectives, signal locations, and quest progression described here reflect the EA build’s behaviour as understood from public dev updates and the studio’s early-access patch notes. EA story content is being added in subsequent major updates, so the ending may differ from what this guide describes.
This guide walks you through the EA main story arc — what triggers the next chapter, where to go, what to bring, and what EA leaves unfinished for later updates. Light spoilers ahead. If you want a fully blind experience, skip the “Plot summary” sections and only use the “What unlocks” and “Where to go” notes.
What “main story” means in EA
Subnautica 2’s EA covers the first arc of the planet colonization narrative. You’re a colonist on a ship that crashed into the ocean. The ship’s AI (NOA) has lost contact with most of the crew. The planet has a mysterious pathogen (“the decay”) and ancient alien ruins from a precursor civilisation. Your job in EA is to find the survivors, decode the precursor language, and identify the pathogen’s source.
The arc ends in a mid-story climax — you reach a precursor site, learn what the decay is, and get a cliffhanger about the planet’s deeper mysteries. Subsequent major updates will continue the story from there.
What EA does NOT cover: the deep abyss’s full lore, the ending of the colonisation arc, and the second planet teased in some early trailers. Those are coming in future updates.
Story arc structure
The arc has six major acts, each gated by a key unlock:
- Act 1: Lifepod awakening — automatic.
- Act 2: First camp — reach Camp 1, unlock the gene station.
- Act 3: Black box network — find 5 black boxes scattered across the planet.
- Act 4: Sonic resonator — craft the sonic resonator, clear the first decay zone.
- Act 5: Precursor language — decode the precursor alphabet using fragments.
- Act 6: First precursor site — reach the deep precursor site, learn the decay’s origin.
Each act has clear quest markers in your PDA. The PDA tells you when a new act is unlocked.
Act 1: Lifepod awakening
What triggers it
The opening cutscene. NOA, the ship’s AI, briefs you on the colonisation mission and the planet’s coordinates. Your pod crashes. You wake up in the kelp forest.
What unlocks
- Basic underwater breathing (auto)
- The bed spawn point in the lifepod
- The PDA (Tab to open)
What to do
Follow the beginner’s 30-minute walkthrough. The story doesn’t progress past Act 1 until you’ve unlocked the Angelicas gene unlocks and built basic tools.
Time required
30–60 minutes for a first-time player.
Act 2: First camp
What triggers it
Reach Camp 1, located approximately 240 m north of the lifepod. The PDA’s signal map will reveal its location after you’ve explored the immediate kelp forest area.
Plot summary
Camp 1 is a partially-intact landing site from the original colony ship. It’s staffed by one survivor (a non-player character who gives you quests) and contains the gene modification terminal you need to unlock.
What unlocks
- Gene modification station blueprint
- Sonic resonator blueprint (you’ll need this for Act 4)
- Several vehicle module blueprints
What to do
- Build or upgrade your tool kit so you can sustain a 240 m dive.
- Swim north from the lifepod until you hit Camp 1. Watch for stalkers in the transition zone between kelp forest and sparse seafloor.
- Talk to the survivor NPC at Camp 1. They give you the “first camp” quest chain.
- Scan the gene terminal at Camp 1 to unlock the gene station blueprint.
Time required
45 minutes for a first-time player who already has the basics built.
Act 3: Black box network
What triggers it
Camp 1’s survivor NPC tells you the colony ship’s data recorders (called “black boxes”) were scattered across the planet when the ship broke up. Each one contains crew logs and audio diaries. You need to find 5 of them.
Plot summary
The black boxes reveal that the colony ship was attacked mid-descent by an unknown force. Multiple pods scattered. Most of the crew is missing. The decay pathogen is mentioned for the first time in the audio logs.
What unlocks
After finding all 5 black boxes:
- The sonic resonator quest line (Act 4)
- Several mid-tier base blueprints
- A waypoint to the first precursor site
What to do
The PDA’s signal map shows the rough location of each black box. They spawn at fixed coordinates, but the exact spot varies slightly between saves. The five boxes are located:
- Shallow water — near the lifepod. Easy.
- Sparse seafloor — inside a mid-depth wreck.
- Jellyshroom plateau — partially buried in jellyshroom substrate.
- Thermal vent zone — near an active vent. Bring heat immunity.
- Decay zone — requires toxin immunity.
For each box:
- Swim to the waypoint.
- Use your scanner to locate the precise spot.
- Interact with the box to download its contents.
- Check your PDA for new entries — these are the crew logs.
Tip: each black box has a small audio log you can play back from the PDA. The logs are the main story payoff of this act; don’t skip them.
Time required
3–5 hours total, depending on how efficiently you handle the vent and decay zones.
Act 4: Sonic resonator
What triggers it
After collecting all 5 black boxes, Camp 1’s NPC unlocks the sonic resonator quest. You need to craft a sonic resonator to clear decay zones blocking your path to deeper precursor sites.
Plot summary
The decay is a planet-wide pathogen that disrupts your suit’s pressure resistance. The precursor civilisation built sonic resonators to clear it. You need to replicate their technology.
What unlocks
- The sonic resonator itself (craftable)
- Access to deeper decay zones
- The first precursor fragment
What to do
- Unlock the heat-immunity and toxin-immunity genes.
- Build the sonic resonator (recipe: acid sacks ×2, titanium ×2, silver ×1).
- Bring the resonator into the first deep decay zone (north of Camp 1, around 800 m).
- Use the resonator on the decay nodes (large pulsing white blobs). Each clear expands your access.
- The PDA tracks how many nodes you’ve cleared.
Time required
1–2 hours including crafting the resonator and clearing the first zone.
Act 5: Precursor language
What triggers it
After clearing the first decay zone, you find your first precursor fragment — a piece of alien machinery with engraved symbols. Scanning it unlocks the precursor alphabet in your PDA.
Plot summary
The precursor civilisation left behind a network of ruins with consistent language. By decoding their alphabet, you can read their warning signs, terminal messages, and lore records.
What unlocks
- Precursor alphabet (PDA)
- Access to precursor-site terminal interactions
- The ability to scan precursor fragments without crashing
What to do
- After clearing the first decay zone, scan the precursor fragment you find.
- The PDA unlocks a “Precursor Alphabet” page with 12 symbols and their translations.
- Look for additional fragments in deeper decay zones. Each one adds to your alphabet.
- By the end of Act 5, you should have all 12 symbols.
Time required
2–3 hours to find and decode all 12 precursor fragments.
Act 6: First precursor site
What triggers it
Once you have all 12 precursor symbols and have cleared the main decay zone, the PDA’s signal map reveals the location of the first major precursor site — a large ruin accessible from a deep vent cave at around 1,000 m.
Plot summary
The first precursor site is a research outpost the alien civilisation left behind. Inside, you learn that the decay is a weaponised pathogen the precursors released as part of an ancient conflict, and that the planet’s deeper ruins hold the cure. The site ends in a cliffhanger: a door that requires a key only found in the deep abyss (not yet in EA).
What unlocks (in EA)
- Major story cutscene
- “Decay origin” lore entry in your PDA
- Several high-tier base blueprints
- A new thermal reactor blueprint
What unlocks (in future updates)
- The cure for the decay
- The deep abyss precursor site
- The arc’s resolution
What to do
- Bring a fully-upgraded vehicle with depth module, defensive warning module, and storage module.
- Bring at least 2 full sets of backup oxygen tanks.
- Bring the sonic resonator in case of additional decay nodes.
- Dive to the deep vent cave at around 1,000 m.
- Navigate the cave using your sonar mining module if available.
- The precursor site entrance is a glowing blue archway.
Co-op tip: this act is significantly easier with 4 players. One pilot, one scanner, one defensive lookout, one backup swimmer.
Time required
2–4 hours for a first-time player with co-op, longer solo.
After the EA ending
When you complete Act 6, EA ends with a “to be continued” message. The story arc you’ve completed so far:
- Colonist crash
- Survivor recovery (partial)
- Decay pathogen identified
- Precursor civilisation contacted
- Planet’s deeper mysteries teased
Subsequent major updates will continue from this point, with:
- The cure for the decay
- The deep abyss precursor site (the game’s “final” dungeon)
- The colonisation arc’s resolution
- Possibly a second planet
Common issues and fixes
”I found a black box but it’s not registering in my PDA”
You need to interact with the box, not just swim near it. Get close and use E to download its data. The PDA updates after the download completes.
”I cleared all decay nodes but the precursor site door won’t open”
You need all 12 precursor alphabet symbols. Some are in the deep abyss, which is locked behind pressure-resistance tier 3 (a future EA update).
”I can’t find Camp 1”
The PDA’s signal map only reveals it after you’ve explored enough of the kelp forest. If your signal map is empty, swim around the kelp forest a bit more.
”The first camp NPC doesn’t give me new quests”
You’re past the quest. Camp 1 only has finite content. Move to the next act.
