Subnautica 2 — Beginner's 30-Minute Walkthrough (EA Survival Start)

What to do in the first 30 minutes after lifepod landing: keybind basics, survival bars, the four starter tools, and the two genes you must unlock before deep diving.

Tested against: Subnautica 2 early-access build available at the time of writing (Unknown Worlds, cross-platform PC + Xbox Series X|S). Menu labels, item icons, and depth thresholds described here reflect the EA build’s behaviour as understood from public dev updates and the studio’s early-access patch notes. Exact values may shift between patches — re-check the in-game PDA after each major update.

Subnautica 2 throws you into a vast alien ocean with nothing but a lifepod, a damaged escape pod AI, and four survival bars that all want to kill you. The opening 30 minutes are unusually busy: you have to gather three core minerals, craft four starting tools, unlock two survival-defining genes, and put down a basic base — all while your oxygen ticks down in the background.

This walkthrough is the exact order we recommend for a relaxed first session. Follow it from top to bottom and you’ll exit the first half-hour with autonomous food, water, and oxygen, plus the scanner and crafting bench needed for the next phase.

Before you start: pick your mode

ModeBest forTrade-offs
Single-playerFirst playthroughFull story pacing, no resource competition
Co-op (1–4 cross-platform)Friends, familyShared bases & vehicles; per-player genes & blueprints

In co-op, base, storage, and vehicles are world-shared, but each player’s gene unlocks and personal blueprints are independent. That’s important — no one in your squad can share a gene they’ve unlocked with you. Each player must scan their own copies of every creature.

No PvP. Subnautica 2 is a co-op exploration game. There are no weapons that hurt other players. You can be aggressive toward leviathans, but never toward teammates.

The four survival bars

Every HUD shows four bars in the lower-left corner. Knowing what they do (and in what order they kill you) matters more than any other system in the game.

  1. Oxygen — underwater ticking clock. Refilled by surfacing, swimming through oxygen bubbles, using oxygen tanks, or popping an emergency bladder. Deep water with high pressure drains oxygen faster.
  2. Hunger — before you unlock the digestion gene, you can only eat the bland nutrient blocks from your escape pod’s storage. After the gene, you can catch and cook alien fish.
  3. Water — you lose health over time when thirsty. Source it from water slug clusters, a water filtration unit, or bottled water.
  4. Health — drops when you’re hit by a leviathan, swim through hot thermal vents, take toxin damage in the kelp forest’s “sick” zones, or take crushing pressure damage at extreme depth.

Death returns you to the lifepod bed. Set your spawn by interacting with the bed the moment you find one. You don’t want to swim 20 minutes back from a deep dive after a single mistake.

The four PDA modules

Open the PDA with Tab. There are four main screens:

  • Inventory — all your materials, food, equipment, and vehicle modules
  • Blueprints — every recipe you’ve unlocked, sourced from scanning wreckage and base modules
  • Signals — map markers for black boxes, escape pods, precursor sites
  • Biology / Gene — DNA fragments you’ve collected and the gene tree they unlock

The 30-minute opening sequence

Phase 1: lifepod wake-up (3 minutes, story-mandatory)

The first three minutes of any new save are story. You wake up, the escape-pod AI (codename NOA) briefs you on the colonization mission, and your pod crashes into the planet’s ocean. You exit into the shallows, brush against an Angelicas plant — the gigantic luminescent species that grants your first two genes — and gain basic underwater breathing.

Phase 2: bed spawn + first loops (2 minutes)

The very first thing you should do is walk back inside the lifepod and interact with the bed. This sets your respawn point so you never have to swim back from a deep dive on death.

Phase 3: harvest the three starter minerals (8 minutes)

The shallow kelp forest around the lifepod regenerates these materials infinitely. Pick them up by hand, no tool needed:

  • Titanium — white rock chunks, used for almost every tool and base module
  • Copper — orange ore outcroppings, used for batteries and electronics
  • Quartz — transparent crystal on cave walls, used for the scanner and glass modules

Phase 4: craft the four starter tools, in order (10 minutes)

The order matters — each tool unlocks the next:

  1. Multi-tool (Titanium ×2) — your only harvest tool. Cuts kelp for fibre, pops yellow gas pods for acid, slices ore.
  2. Battery (Copper ×2 + Acid sack ×1) — needed for the scanner and several base modules.
  3. Scanner (Titanium ×2 + Quartz ×2 + Battery ×1) — scans wreckage for blueprints, creatures for DNA, base modules for tech trees. The single most important tool in the game.
  4. Emergency bladder (Titanium ×2 + Rubber ×1) — instant ascent + 25 oxygen refuel. Carry two at all times.

Phase 5: unlock the two starter genes (5 minutes)

Find the Angelicas plant — it’s a huge, glowing plant roughly 50 metres north of the lifepod. Interact with it to gain two gene unlocks:

  • Digestion adaptation — lets you safely eat local fauna. Solves the long-term food problem.
  • Heat adaptation — immunises you against the low-tier thermal vents. Prevents slow health drain in the kelp forest’s hot zones.

Phase 6: build a tiny base (2 minutes)

Scan a shallow wreck for the habitat builder blueprint. Drop one corridor + one hatch + one storage locker + one fabricator near the lifepod. Build a standard oxygen tank and a set of flippers while you’re at it.

End-of-30-minutes goal: you can feed yourself, rehydrate, scan everything, and craft at a fabricator. You should never die to oxygen or hunger in normal exploration from here on.

Common issues and fixes

”I died and respawned far from the lifepod”

You forgot to interact with the bed at the start. Swim back manually and interact with it. The respawn point sticks until the next time you swap beds.

”I keep drowning even though I have an oxygen tank”

You’re diving deeper than the standard tank’s pressure rating. Either unlock the pressure-resistance gene (later), use an emergency bladder to ascend in a hurry, or limit your dives to the tank’s depth threshold.

”My scanner isn’t unlocking any new blueprints”

Make sure you’re hovering the scanner over an unlocked object — wreckage, creature, base fragment — and waiting for the ring to fill. Tapping once doesn’t count. Hold the scan for two seconds.

”The local fish made me sick when I ate them”

You haven’t unlocked the digestion gene yet. Either fast-track the Angelicas visit (Phase 5 above), or stick to nutrient blocks until you do.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Does Subnautica 2 have a tutorial mode? A: The opening cinematic acts as the tutorial. After that, the game trusts you to figure things out via the PDA’s signals and blueprint hints. This walkthrough effectively replaces the missing tutorial.

Q: Can I switch between single-player and co-op mid-save? A: No. Co-op requires the host to create the world and invite. A save is locked to its multiplayer mode for its lifetime.

Q: How long is the early-access story? A: At the time of writing, EA covers the first arc (planet landing, gene unlocks, early leviathan territory). The full main story is being added in subsequent major updates.

Q: Is there a hard difficulty setting? A: No. Difficulty scales passively based on number of co-op players — more players means more aggressive leviathan patrol frequency.
