STAR WARS Zero Company on Steam Deck — Unsupported Status, Minimum Specs, and Workaround Notes

STAR WARS Zero Company is officially Unsupported on Steam Deck per Valve's Deck Verified program. EA's FAQ notes SteamOS is not supported. The PC minimum (GTX 1080 / 16GB RAM / 50GB disk) exceeds Steam Deck hardware. Workaround notes, expected performance on Steam Deck OLED, why 'Unsupported' is the right rating, and whether to wait for a patch.

TL;DR: STAR WARS Zero Company is officially Unsupported on Steam Deck. EA’s FAQ notes SteamOS is not supported. The PC minimum spec (GTX 1080 / 16 GB RAM / 50 GB) exceeds the Steam Deck’s hardware envelope. The game can be installed via Proton Experimental, with medium-quality settings + 1280x800 / 1280x720 resolution yielding ~30 FPS in heavy combat. Steam Deck OLED is ~5% faster than LCD, not enough to change the rating. If you have a PS5 / Xbox / PC monitor, play there instead.

Who this is for

  • Steam Deck owners wondering whether to install Zero Company on the go
  • Players deciding between Zero Company on PS5 / Xbox / PC / Steam Deck
  • Tactics game fans who want to know if Deck Verified is a hard requirement or a soft suggestion
  • Owners of Steam Deck OLED wondering if the new model runs the game better

1. The Deck Verified rating — Unsupported, with caveats

Valve’s Deck Verified program rates games into four categories: Verified (works out of the box), Playable (works with manual tweaks), Unsupported (does not work or has critical issues), and Untested (no data). Zero Company is currently rated Unsupported.

The rating is not arbitrary. Three issues push it out of Playable:

IssueDetail
Minimum spec mismatchThe GTX 1080 minimum exceeds the Steam Deck’s custom AMD APU performance envelope, even at the Deck’s lower 1280x800 resolution.
EA App launcher dependencyZero Company requires the EA App launcher, which has no native Linux support. Proton can wrap it, but Proton compatibility for the EA App has known issues with auto-update loops and offline-mode bugs.
UI scaling on the 1280x800 screenThe Den management screens (text-heavy Recruit / Training / Black Market menus) have UI elements that do not scale gracefully to the Deck’s smaller screen. Some buttons are too small to tap reliably with touch.

Each of these issues alone might earn a Playable rating. Together, they earn Unsupported. This is the right call by Valve — the rating tells you “expect to spend time troubleshooting” before you commit.

2. PC minimum vs Steam Deck hardware

The PC minimum spec:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-8400 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1080 / AMD Radeon RX 580
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Disk: 50 GB

The Steam Deck’s custom AMD APU integrates CPU + GPU on one chip:

  • CPU: AMD Zen 2 4-core / 8-thread, ~3.5 GHz
  • GPU: AMD RDNA 2, 8 CUs, ~1.6 GHz
  • RAM: 16 GB unified (shared CPU + GPU)
  • Disk: 64 GB eMMC / 256-512 GB NVMe SSD / OLED: 512 GB-1 TB NVMe SSD

The Steam Deck’s GPU is roughly equivalent to a GTX 1650 in raw shader performance — between the RX 580 (minimum spec) and the GTX 1660 Super. The 16 GB unified memory is at the upper edge but is shared with the system, leaving the game maybe ~12 GB usable (similar to a desktop with 16 GB but a discrete GPU using its own VRAM).

In short: the Deck’s GPU is below the minimum spec, and the unified memory is at the limit. This is a Playable-at-best situation, not a clean Verified rating.

3. Expected performance — what works, what doesn’t

Community testing on Steam Deck LCD (post-launch, 2026-09-04 onward) shows:

Setting presetResolutionAvg FPSCombat dip
Ultra (preset)1280x800~22 FPS16-18 FPS
High1280x800~26 FPS20-22 FPS
Medium1280x800~32 FPS25-28 FPS
Low1280x800~40 FPS32-35 FPS

The Medium preset at 1280x800 is the sweet spot for stable 30 FPS. The Low preset runs faster but the visual downgrade is severe — the Den management screens become noticeably blurry and the tactical battlefields lose atmospheric depth.

Steam Deck OLED at native 1920x1080 is ~5% slower than LCD at 1280x800 Medium. The OLED’s better cooling and higher VRAM bandwidth offset the higher pixel count, but the net is roughly equal. The OLED’s HDR does not apply (Zero Company does not support HDR).

4. Proton setup — installing on Steam Deck despite Unsupported

If you want to try it anyway, the install flow is:

  1. Switch to Desktop Mode (Steam button → Power → Switch to Desktop).
  2. Open Steam → Settings → Compatibility.
  3. Enable “Steam Play for all titles” and set the runtime to Proton Experimental.
  4. Switch back to Gaming Mode.
  5. Install Zero Company through the normal Steam library flow.
  6. On first launch, Proton Experimental will pull the wrapper and the EA App will install in a Proton prefix.
  7. Accept the EA App login, and the game will launch.

Expect 5-10 minutes of one-time setup. After that, the game launches in ~30 seconds. The Proton Experimental runtime handles the EA App wrapper, but if the EA App prompts for an update mid-session, allow it and relaunch.

Known Proton issues:

  • The EA App occasionally prompts for a forced update that can fail in Proton. If this happens, delete the Proton prefix (~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/<appid>) and relaunch.
  • Offline mode in the EA App does not work cleanly in Proton — Zero Company requires an online connection at launch for license verification.
  • The game’s first launch may take 2-3x longer than usual because Proton is compiling shaders.

5. Workaround notes for the Den management UI

The Den’s Recruit / Training / Black Market / Mission Select screens are the most awkward part of the Steam Deck experience. The text-heavy UI does not scale well to 1280x800, and some buttons are too small for reliable touch input.

Workarounds:

  • Connect a Bluetooth keyboard (Logitech K380, Apple Magic Keyboard, etc.) for Den sessions. The keyboard is needed only for the ~5 minutes of text input (save game naming, search filters in the Black Market).
  • Use Steam Input touchpad mode with a right-stick virtual mouse for finer pointer control. The community has shared Steam Input profiles for Zero Company on the Steam Input workshop.
  • Accept the touch-tap imprecision and use the L-stick D-pad navigation for the Den. Slower but reliable.

6. The verdict — Unsupported is the right rating

Zero Company on Steam Deck is workable but compromised. The Unsupported rating is honest. If you have a PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / desktop PC available, play there. The Steam Deck experience is for owners who do not have alternatives and accept the visual / framerate compromise.

EA’s FAQ says the team is “monitoring feedback” on Steam Deck compatibility but has not announced a Steam Deck-specific patch. Bit Reactor’s post-launch priorities are bug fixes and the announced Deluxe cosmetic DLC packs. A Steam Deck-specific patch would require UI re-scaling work + a Proton-stable EA App wrapper, neither of which is on the public roadmap.

Recommendation: if you primarily play on Steam Deck and Zero Company is your most-wanted 2026 tactics game, install it and accept the medium-quality experience. If you have any other platform available, play there.
