Forza Horizon 6 Core Mechanics: Car Classes, Tuning, Drifting, and How to Actually Win
The four underlying rules every Forza Horizon 6 driver needs to know: the car class system (D to X), basic tuning, how drifting actually works, and the difference between Arcade and Simulation driving models. Beginner-friendly with concrete setups.
TL;DR: Cars are classified D 100 → X 999 by Performance Index (PI). Pick the highest PI car that fits the event’s class cap. Drifting is a separate skill from racing — use handbrake + clutch kick to start. Tuning matters only at high class levels — don’t tune a stock D 100 car.

1. The Car Class system: D 100 → X 999
Every car in Forza Horizon 6 has a Performance Index (PI) that places it in a class. The PI is calculated from the car’s actual performance specs (power, weight, grip, braking).
The 9 classes

The rules
- Every event has a class cap (e.g., “B 700” means you can use any car with PI ≤ 700)
- You cannot use a car above the cap for that event
- You can downgrade a car to a lower class by reducing its power / adding weight
The strategy
- Pick the car with the highest PI that still fits under the cap — usually the best strategy
- Don’t waste money upgrading a low-tier car — buy a higher-tier car instead
- Don’t tune a stock D 100 car — the gains are negligible
Common pitfall: using a tuned D 100 car in a B 700 race. Even with max tuning, a D 100 cannot compete with a stock B 700. Match the class, then upgrade.
2. Arcade vs Simulation driving model
You picked this at character creation, but you can switch it per event in the settings.
Arcade model
- Steering assist is on — the car auto-corrects when you over-steer
- Braking assist is on — the car brakes perfectly at the apex
- Traction control is on — wheelspin is reduced
- Damage is cosmetic — your car doesn’t slow down from hitting walls
Simulation model
- Steering assist is off — you must steer perfectly
- Braking assist is off — you must brake manually
- Traction control is off — wheelspin is real
- Damage can affect performance — but FH6 has “Sim damage off” option
The recommendation
- First 30 hours: Arcade. It’s more fun, more forgiving
- After 30 hours: switch to Simulation. You’ll feel the difference immediately
- Online: Simulation required. Most Horizon Open races are sim-model
Common pitfall: playing Arcade forever because “it’s easier.” You will never learn real racing skills. Switch to Simulation once you can win on Arcade consistently.
3. Tuning: when it matters and when it doesn’t
Tuning is where most new players lose hours without gaining performance.
The 4 tuning categories

When tuning matters
- B 700 and above: tuning matters a lot. A 0.5° camber change can win a race.
- D 100–C 600: tuning is mostly cosmetic. The car is too slow for tuning to matter.
- Top-speed events (X class): tuning the gearing for max top speed is essential.
The 3-minute basic tune (for any car)
- Tires: max width front and rear
- Gearing: adjust final drive so top speed is just above the event’s top-speed requirement
- Anti-roll bars: set both front and rear to soft (around 15–25)
This is a “safe” tune that works for 80% of cars.
Common pitfall: spending 2 hours tuning a D 100 car. The gains are negligible. Only tune cars you actually race competitively.
4. Drifting: a separate skill
Forza Horizon 6 has dedicated Drift Zones and Drift Events. Drifting is its own skill, separate from circuit racing.
The 3 ways to start a drift
- Handbrake: pull the handbrake mid-corner — easiest, most reliable
- Clutch kick: tap the clutch while flooring the throttle — more natural, requires manual transmission
- Power oversteer: lift off the throttle mid-corner — fastest, hardest
How to hold a drift
- Initiate the slide using one of the 3 methods above
- Counter-steer to keep the car sliding sideways
- Modulate throttle — too much = spin, too little = grip up
- Don’t look at the wall — look at where you want the car to go
How to score in drift zones
- Angle: the wider your slide angle, the higher the score multiplier
- Speed: faster drifts score more
- Length: longer drifts score more
Drift builds: what to use
The best drift cars in FH6 are:
- Nissan Silvia S15 (A 700) — beginner-friendly drift build
- Mazda RX-7 FD (S 800) — classic rotary
- Toyota Supra MK4 (S 800) — modern drift king
- Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 (X 999) — top-tier
Drift tuning (basic)
- Stiffen the rear anti-roll bar to make the rear looser
- Reduce rear tire grip (smaller rear tires, lower tire pressure)
- Increase power (more power = easier to break rear grip)
Common pitfall: trying to drift a stock AWD car (Skyline GT-R). AWD drifts are possible but hard. Start with RWD cars (Silvia, RX-7, Supra) for learning.
5. The 3 racing lines you must know
Every race has 3 lines through a corner. Knowing which to pick wins races.
The 3 lines
- Outside-inside-apex-outside — the textbook line, fastest through the corner
- Outside-inside — cuts the corner, faster on entry but slower on exit
- Inside-outside — sacrifices corner speed for straight-line speed (good for sweeping turns)
When to use which

| Sweeping (45° turn) | Inside-outside — straight-line speed matters |

Common pitfall: taking the textbook line on every corner. The fastest line depends on the corner type. Learn all 3.
6. Braking: the most important skill
In simulation driving, braking is more important than steering.
The 3 braking techniques

| Cadence braking | On loose surfaces (dirt, snow) — pump the brakes |
The common mistakes
- Braking too early: you arrive at the corner too slow, get overtaken
- Braking too late: you lock up, hit the wall, lose 3 seconds
- Not braking at all in a corner: you understeer into the wall
The fix
- Braking Line (Full) shows you the AI’s braking points — copy them for the first 10 hours
- Then turn braking line off and find your own points
Common pitfall: leaving braking line on forever. You’ll never learn real braking points. Use it as a crutch, then remove it.
7. Putting it all together: a 1-minute pre-race checklist
Before every race:
- What’s the class cap? Pick the highest PI car under the cap
- Is this a circuit or cross-country? Different cars for each
- Tires: are they street, sport, or off-road? Match the surface
- Tune? (only if you’re racing at B 700 or above)
- Driving model: Arcade for fun, Simulation for competitive
Run this for 20 races. It becomes muscle memory.
