Final Fantasy XIV Getting Started: Dawntrail 7.51/7.56, Free Trial, and Your First 30 Hours
New to FFXIV in 2026? This guide covers the Free Trial scope, how to skip to Dawntrail with Story Skip, the 7.51 'Dancing Mad' Ultimate unlock, class/job pick for new players, and a 30-hour MSQ roadmap that gets you to endgame content.
TL;DR: FFXIV has a Free Trial up to level 70 + Heavensward content — unlimited time, no subscription. Skip the story if you are willing to pay for Story Skip ($15) — otherwise the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ) takes 200+ hours. The new Pictomancer is the most fun class for new players in Dawntrail. Endgame 7.51 brings the Dancing Mad Ultimate raid.
Who this guide is for
- You just bought FFXIV (or are starting the Free Trial) on Steam / PC / Mac / PS5 / Xbox
- You are unsure whether to play Free Trial or buy the full game
- You want a sane class/job pick for your first character
- You do not need to read this if you are level 100 with BiS gear
This is the first guide in our zero-to-endgame FFXIV series. Read the others in any order:
- Core Mechanics: GCDs, oGCDs, and the Job Gauge — coming soon
- Dawntrail Jobs Tier List: Pictomancer, Viper, and the New Meta — coming soon
- Endgame Loop: Raid, Savage, Ultimate, and Variant/Criterion Dungeons — coming soon
1. Free Trial vs Full Game vs Complete Edition
In 2026, FFXIV has three purchase options.
| Option | Price | What’s included | Subscription | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free Trial | $0 | Play up to level 70, Heavensward content, Stormblood content, Shadowbringers content | None, no expiry | Trying the game, F2P players |
| Starter Edition | $20 | A Realm Reborn + Heavensward | $13/month | First-time paid players |
| Complete Edition | $60 | All expansions including Dawntrail (current) | $13/month | New players in 2026 |
Recommendations
- First time? Start with Free Trial. No credit card, no expiry, you can play 200+ hours for $0
- Loved the trial? Buy the Complete Edition ($60), it includes Dawntrail
- Coming back after a break? Buy the Dawntrail expansion ($40) and pick up where you left off
Common pitfall: buying the Starter Edition and then realizing you need Dawntrail separately. New players should buy the Complete Edition, not Starter.
Free Trial restrictions (in 2026)
The Free Trial now includes:
- Levels 1–70 (covers Heavensward)
- No subscription needed
- Full market board access
- Gold Saucer access (casino minigames)
- Cannot form a party with non-Free-Trial players (but can join them)
- Cannot use the Market Board to sell (but can buy)
2. Should you skip the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ)?
The MSQ is the single biggest barrier to FFXIV enjoyment. It’s also the single best story in MMOs.
| Approach | Time | Story understanding | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play the full MSQ | 200+ hours | Full emotional investment, every plot twist lands | Free |
| Buy a Story Skip potion | 0 hours, instant level 80 | YouTube recap required | $15 per skip |
| Buy a Job/Level Skip + skip to Dawntrail | 0 hours | Same as above | $25 total |
Recommendations
- If you are 18–30 years old: play the MSQ. It’s an incredible JRPG story
- If you are 30+ with limited gaming time: Story Skip to current expansion, watch YouTube recaps
- If you have FFXIV FOMO from years of memes (Hildy, Emet-Selch): play the MSQ. The memes only hit if you know the story
Common pitfall: Story Skipping to Endwalker (level 90) and then quitting because the level-90-to-100 MSQ has emotional moments you don’t care about. The skip should be only to Dawntrail, not to the current expansion.
3. Class / Job pick: 21 jobs in 2026
FFXIV has 21 jobs, each with a unique playstyle. You can switch jobs freely on a single character, so the “wrong pick” doesn’t matter much.
The new-player ranking (Dawntrail era)
| Job | Difficulty | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pictomancer ⭐ NEW | ⭐⭐ | Magical DPS (caster) | Easiest rotation in Dawntrail; visual painter gameplay |
| Viper ⭐ NEW | ⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Dual-blade combat, fast-paced but not punishing |
| Warrior of Light ⭐ NEW | ⭐⭐⭐ | Tank | Sword-and-board with light-themed kit |
| White Mage | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Healer | Classic healer, easy concept, slow-buff Healer |
| Sage | ⭐⭐⭐ | Healer | Barrier healer, mobile |
| Astrologian | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Healer | Card-based, very busy |
| Dragoon | ⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Positional jumps, mid difficulty |
| Monk | ⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Fast-form rotation |
| Reaper | ⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Shroud gauge, very satisfying |
| Ninja | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Mudra-based, complex |
| Samurai | ⭐⭐⭐ | Melee DPS | Three-sen rotation, simple |
| Bard | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Ranged DPS | Songs + DoTs |
| Machinist | ⭐⭐⭐ | Ranged DPS | Heat gauge, simple |
| Dancer | ⭐⭐⭐ | Ranged DPS | Partner buff, mobile |
| Black Mage | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Magical DPS | Astral/Umbral, turret, hard to master |
| Summoner | ⭐⭐⭐ | Magical DPS | Demi-summons, simple |
| Red Mage | ⭐⭐⭐ | Magical DPS | Dual-cast, mobile |
| Paladin | ⭐⭐⭐ | Tank | Sword-and-board classic |
| Warrior | ⭐⭐ | Tank | Self-heal tank, easiest |
| Dark Knight | ⭐⭐⭐ | Tank | MP-management tank |
| Gunbreaker | ⭐⭐⭐ | Tank | Cartridge-based |
The recommendation
- First character: Pictomancer. Casting a brush to summon creatures that attack is one of the most fun jobs ever made. The rotation is forgiving — perfect for learning the GCD/oGCD loop
- Second character: Warrior. If you want to tank, Warrior is the most forgiving tank
- Skip Ninja / Black Mage for your first character. They have high skill ceilings and you’ll struggle
Common pitfall: picking Ninja because “it’s strong.” It’s strong once you master it. As a new player, you will be useless to raid groups. Pick a forgiving job, learn the GCD/oGCD loop, then try Ninja on your second job.
4. The MSQ roadmap: 200 hours to endgame (or 0)
The 7 expansion arcs
| Expansion | Levels | Approx. hours | Story arc |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Realm Reborn | 1–50 | 50–80 | The original FFXIV story |
| Heavensward | 51–60 | 40 | Dragonsong War |
| Stormblood | 61–70 | 35 | Ala Mhigo liberation |
| Shadowbringers | 71–80 | 50 | The First |
| Endwalker | 81–90 | 50 | The Endsinger |
| Dawntrail | 91–100 | 35 | The New World |
Total: 200+ hours of MSQ to reach the level 100 Dawntrail endgame.
The accelerated path
- Buy Complete Edition ($60) → Start at level 1, play through ARR+Heavensward normally (90 hours, the best story)
- Then buy a Story Skip potion ($15) → Skip to Dawntrail directly
- Total cost: $75 + subscription, time saved: ~120 hours
5. The Dawntrail endgame (Patch 7.51 / 7.56)
The current patch cycle in 2026 is 7.5X. Here’s what’s live:

7.55 (live in July 2026)
- PvP Series 11 — Crystalline Conflict ranked season
- Crystalline Conflict Regional Championship 2026
7.56 (upcoming)
- PvP Series 11 ends September 8, 2026
- Dawntrail Alliance Raid continuation
The endgame activities
| Activity | Type | Difficulty | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Variant Dungeons | Solo / 1–4 player | Story mode | Cosmetic, lore |
| Criterion Dungeons | 4-player | Hard | Mount, glam |
| Savage Raids | 8-player | Very hard | Best gear |
| Ultimate Raids | 8-player | Hardest content in the game | Weapon + bragging rights |
| Extreme Trials | 8-player | Hard | Mount, weapon |
| Cosmic Exploration | Solo / co-op | Easy | Currency, tools |
| The Hunt (B-rank, S-rank, ELITE) | World mobs | Solo / group | Currency, mounts |
| Treasure Map | Solo / party | Varies | Gil, drops |
| Gold Saucer | Casino minigames | Easy | MGP currency |
6. The 10 settings to change in your first hour
Display & Performance
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| FPS limit | Cap at monitor refresh | 144 Hz is fine, 240+ Hz wastes GPU |
| V-Sync | Off | Adds input lag |
| Anti-Aliasing | FXAA | Cheap, looks good |
| Mouse mode | Standard if you are on PC | Some controller users find this jarring |
Gameplay
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Party leader | Anyone | Default works |
| Auto-follow | Off | You need to learn movement |
| HUD size | Default for desktop, Large for laptop | Big HUD is easier to read |
| Show target HP % | On | Required for raid UI |
| Show party list buffs | On | Healers need this |
| Show enemy cast bar | On | Required for raid mechanics |
Common pitfall: turning off the party list. As a healer, you need it visible at all times.
7. Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I switch jobs freely? A: Yes. One character can be every job. There is no “alt” character required.

Q: Can I play with my friend who is on Free Trial? A: Yes, you can join their party. They cannot form a party, but they can join yours.
Q: How long is the MSQ? A: 200+ hours total. About 35 hours for Dawntrail alone.

Q: Can I solo all content? A: Most content, yes. Savage Raids and Ultimate Raids require 8 players. Variant Dungeons can be done solo.
8. Next steps
You are ready to start. The natural next read is Core Mechanics: GCDs, oGCDs, and the Job Gauge — once you understand the dual-timer system, the game opens up.
If you want to pick a job that’s strong in Dawntrail, jump to Dawntrail Jobs Tier List: Pictomancer, Viper, and the New Meta.
Version note (2026-07-18): Based on FFXIV Patch 7.51 (June 2, 2026) running on Dawntrail. Dancing Mad (Ultimate) is the new headline raid. Job balance and content unlocks shift in mid-patch; check the Lodestone for the latest. The 21 jobs and 7 expansion arcs are stable.
