Diablo 4 Getting Started: Season 14 'Lord of Hatred', Server Pick, and the First 10 Hours
New to Diablo 4 in 2026? This guide covers Season 14 'Lord of Hatred' mechanics (Warplans + Marks of El'Druin), Eternal vs Seasonal choice, class pick for new players, and the 10-hour leveling path to your first Pit push.
TL;DR: Pick Seasonal (Season 14) for the new player experience — Warplans + Marks of El’Druin are the headline mechanics, and Eternal is mostly for veterans. Necromancer is the easiest class for first-time players. The first 10 hours are Campaign → Capstone Dungeon → Pit tier 1 → Tormented Bosses.
Who this guide is for
- You just bought Diablo 4 (or are about to) on Battle.net / Steam / Xbox / PS5
- You are unsure whether to play Seasonal or Eternal
- You want a sane class pick for the first 60 hours
- You do not need to read this if you already push Pit 100+ and have a Malignant Heart stash
This is the first guide in our zero-to-endgame Diablo 4 series. Read the others in any order:
- Core Mechanics: Aspects, Paragon, Glyphs, and the Item Filter — coming soon
- Season 14 Endgame: Warplans, Tormented Bosses, and Pit Push — coming soon
- Class Tier List: Season 14 Meta Picks — coming soon
1. Seasonal vs Eternal: don’t overthink this
Diablo 4 has two realms. Once you start, you cannot move characters between them without paying a (small) fee.
| Realm | Reset | New players should… | Veterans should… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seasonal | Every ~3 months | Start here. New mechanics, fresh economy, free cosmetics | League-race for ladder rank |
| Eternal | Never | Skip until you understand the game | Stash all your alts |
Why Seasonal for new players:
- Free cosmetics and a mount as you progress the Season Journey
- Renown (account-wide bonus) is shared across all your Seasonal characters, so every new character starts stronger
- The current season’s mechanic (this season: Warplans) is the only way to play the new content; Eternal is “Diablo 4 minus the season”
Common pitfall: starting on Eternal because “I’m not competitive.” You will miss the new mechanics and the economy will be flooded with veterans’ loot. Seasonal, always.
2. Class pick: the 6 classes ranked for first-timers
The Season 14 meta has settled. Here is the new-player ranking:
| Class | New-player friendly? | Season 14 strength | Playstyle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Necromancer | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Top-tier (S) | Summon undead, control the field, easy survivability |
| Sorcerer | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | A-tier | Glass cannon ranged, high damage but you die if you stand still |
| Spiritborn | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | S-tier (best mobility) | Newest class, melee/ranged mix, very forgiving |
| Druid | ⭐⭐⭐ | A-tier | Shapeshift + companion, slow but durable |
| Rogue | ⭐⭐ | A-tier | High DPS, very squishy — not great for first-timers |
| Barbarian | ⭐⭐ | B-tier (whirlwind build still strong) | Tanky but slow campaign; payoff is mid-endgame |
Recommendations:
- First-ever character: Necromancer. Minions tank for you while you learn the game. The new Army of the Dead build auto-pilot-clears most content.
- Second character: Spiritborn. If you want melee but with mobility, this is the post-launch class. Excellent solo leveling.
- Skip Rogue / Barbarian for your first run — they require precise positioning and you’ll die often.
Common pitfall: picking Rogue because “DPS go brr.” You’ll be level 30 with 14 deaths and quit. Pick a forgiving class first, then try the squishy ones after you understand the mechanics.
3. The Season 14 “Lord of Hatred” mechanic: Warplans
This season’s headline is Warplans — a new party-shared objective system. Understanding it gets you the most XP/hour.
What is a Warplan?
A Warplan is a board of 3–5 objectives that all party members work toward. The whole party gets credit when any member makes progress.
Examples:
- “Kill 200 Elites in Helltide” — anyone in the party killing Elites counts
- “Open 30 Caches from Nightmare Dungeons” — shared
- “Defeat 1 Tormented Boss” — shared
Why this is huge
Before Warplans, party play had a progress penalty — if your friends were doing different objectives, you wasted each other’s time. Season 14 fixes this: everyone’s progress feeds one board, so co-op is now strictly more efficient than solo.
The new currency: Marks of El’Druin
Marks of El’Druin are the season-specific currency. You spend them to:
- Roll a new Warplan for the party
- Buy a small cache of legendaries at the Seasonal vendor
- Reset your Paragon board without cost (a small QoL win)
Common pitfall: playing solo and ignoring Warplans. They are now the most efficient XP/hour in the game, even solo. Open the Warplan board every 20 minutes and accept whatever fits your current zone.
4. The 10-hour first-run path
Don’t wander. Here is the path that gets you to endgame the fastest.
Hours 0–2: Campaign (skip if you’ve done it before)
- First character: play the campaign. It is the best tutorial in the game, and you unlock every system along the way
- Alt characters: skip the campaign via the Skip Campaign option. You start at level 1 with all the waypoints and renown unlocked
Hours 2–5: Helltide and Tree of Whispers
- Helltide (zone-wide event) is the best XP/hour from level 15 to 60
- Tree of Whispers gives 4 free caches per day — always do them
- Capstone Dungeon at level 50 unlocks World Tier 3 / 4 / 5
Hours 5–8: Capstone and World Tier 4
- Capstone Dungeon is the level-50 quest. Beat it once, World Tier 3 unlocks
- Push to World Tier 4 by clearing more Capstones. This is where gear upgrades matter
- Start Nightmare Dungeons (NDs) — they give Glyph XP and Ancestral loot
Hours 8–10: Pit and Tormented Bosses
- The Pit unlocks at World Tier 4. It is the timed dungeon that gives the highest-density loot
- Tormented Bosses spawn on a rotation. Kill them for Mystery Caches (Ancestral uniques)
- Pit tier 1 → 10 is achievable for a fresh level 60 character with a build guide
Common pitfall: staying in the campaign past level 50. The XP/hour of campaign vs Helltide/ND is 2× worse. Skip campaign on alt characters and go straight to Helltide.
5. The 10 settings to change in your first hour
Display & Performance
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Rate Display | On | Free FPS counter |
| V-Sync | Off | Adds input lag |
| Camera Shake | Off | Diablo 4’s shake is excessive; turning it off saves your neck |
| Colorblind mode | As needed | Diablo 4’s colorblind modes are good; don’t be shy |
Gameplay
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Show damage numbers | On | You need to see if your build is actually scaling |
| Loot filter (item quality) | Rare+ by default | You don’t need 50 Magic items cluttering the screen |
| Auto-pickup gold | Off | Walking over gold is fine; auto-pickup is a slight input delay |
| Elite bar always on minimap | On | Helltide Elites are your main XP source |
| Co-op ping on screen edge | On | You can see when a friend is in trouble without alt-tabbing |
| Stash tab management | Use the new loadouts | Switching between alts with the same build should be 1 click |
Common pitfall: leaving loot filter at “show all” and missing the one Legendary in the pile because 50 whites covered it. Set
Rare+on day one.
6. The biggest Day-1 mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Salvaging legendaries for parts | You might need that legendary for an Aspect | Extract Aspect at the Occultist, then salvage |
| Not unlocking the Mount | Walking everywhere is slow and exposes you to ambushes | Mount unlocks in the campaign, ~30 minutes in |
| Ignoring Renown | Every region has Renown: dungeons, waypoints, statues | Clear one region 100% before moving to the next |
| Stacking Cooldown Reduction | In Season 14, CDR is weaker than Resource Cost Reduction | Check the build guide you’re following |
| Not joining a clan | Clans give 100% bonus XP if a member is in the same zone | Find a casual clan on the official Discord |
7. Frequently asked questions

Q: Can I play with friends on different platforms? A: Yes. Diablo 4 has full cross-play and cross-save in 2026. Your Battle.net account is portable across PC and console.
Q: How long is a season? A: ~3 months. The exact date is on the launcher. At season end, your Seasonal characters move to Eternal with all gear.
Q: I’m overwhelmed by the loot. What do I do? A: Install D4LF (Diablo 4 Loot Filter) from GitHub. It auto-hides trash and highlights upgrades. New players who use it learn the game 3× faster.
8. Next steps
