Dead by Daylight Core Mechanics: Perks, Add-ons, and the Chase Loop
The four underlying rules every DbD player needs to know: how the perk system works, what add-ons do, the basic chase loop (window vault / pallet stun / 360), and the gen-rush vs pressure meta on Killer side.
TL;DR: Perks are permanent unlockables that define your build — they outlevel the killer/survivor you choose. Add-ons are match-limited items that modify your power (Killer side) or your items (Survivor side). The chase loop is the core gameplay: window vault / pallet stun / 360 juke. Gen-rush is the Killer-side meta problem — pressure generators, don’t tunnel Survivors.
Who this guide is for
- You have played 10–30 hours of Dead by Daylight and want to climb
- You don’t understand why Survivors are always faster than you as Killer
- You want to know which perks to prioritize
- You are not yet thinking about Iridescent rank
This is the second guide in our zero-to-rank Dead by Daylight series.
1. The perk system: the actual progression
Perks are the most important progression in DbD. They outlevel the character you choose.
How perks work
- Each Survivor / Killer has 3 unique perks locked behind their level
- You unlock a perk by leveling that character to 30, 35, 40
- Once unlocked, the perk can be used on ANY character of that role (Survivor perk on any Survivor, etc.)
- You have 4 perk slots per character — pick 4 perks to bring
The “Teachable” system
- You can unlock a teachable version of a perk from the Bloodweb (the random unlock system)
- The teachable appears at level 30+ in the web
- Always grab the teachable — it lets you use the perk on any character
The recommended perk progression for Survivors
| Priority | Perk | Character | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Self-Care | Claudette | Self-heal without a medkit — the most-used Survivor perk |
| 2 | Iron Will | Jake | No grunts of pain when injured — stealth god |
| 3 | Bond | Dwight | See other Survivors within 20m — coordinates team |
| 4 | Sprint Burst | Meg | 150% speed burst when starting a run — chase escape |
| 5 | Dead Hard | David | Dodge an attack mid-chase — high skill ceiling but strong |
| 6 | Borrowed Time | Bill | When unhooking, you and the unhooked survivor get Endurance |
Common pitfall: ignoring perks. 4 empty perk slots = 4 missed opportunities. Run 4 perks always.
2. The recommended perk progression for Killers
| Priority | Perk | Character | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pop Goes the Weasel | Clown | Kick a generator, 25% regression — gen slowdown |
| 2 | Corrupt Intervention | Plague | Block 3 farthest generators for 2 min — early game control |
| 3 | Barbecue & Chilli | Cannibal | See auras after hooking — info perk |
| 4 | Sloppy Butcher | Legion | Survivors heal 50% slower — anti-heal |
| 5 | Tinkerer | Hillbilly | Undetectable for 12s after breaking a gen — ambush |
| 6 | Save the Best for Last | Shape | Obsession-less obsession mechanic — chase damage boost |
The killer perk rule
- Always run at least one gen slowdown perk (Pop, Corrupt, or Surveillance)
- Without gen slowdown, Survivors will repair 5 generators in 6 minutes and escape
Common pitfall: running 4 chase perks. Chase perks don’t win games — gen slowdown wins games.
3. Add-ons: the match-by-match modifier
Add-ons are limited-use items that modify your power (Killer) or your item (Survivor). They are bought with currency and used per match.
Killer add-ons
| Add-on category | Effect |
|---|---|
| Common (brown) | Small modifier, low impact |
| Uncommon (yellow) | Moderate modifier |
| Rare (green) | Big modifier, often build-defining |
| Very Rare (purple) | Major modifier |
| Ultra Rare (pink) | Build-defining, often broken |
The add-on rule for Killers
- Use brown / yellow add-ons until you understand your power
- Save purple / pink for important matches (ranked, or against tough Survivors)
Survivor add-ons
| Add-on | Effect |
|---|---|
| Medkit add-ons | Faster healing, more charges |
| Toolbox add-ons | Faster generator repair |
| Flashlight add-ons | Faster blind, longer range |
| Map add-ons | Reveal more of the map |
Common pitfall: burning ultra-rare add-ons on day 1. You’ll learn faster with brown add-ons and won’t waste them.
4. The chase loop: the core gameplay
Chase is what happens when the Killer spots a Survivor and tries to hit them. Survivors delay the chase with map features.
The 3 basic chase mechanics
1. Window vaults
- Action: hold interact key near a window or pallet to vault over
- Slows the Killer significantly (most Killers lose ~3 seconds)
- Use case: when the Killer is right behind you
2. Pallet stuns
- Action: stand near a pallet, run past, drop it on the Killer
- Stuns the Killer for ~3 seconds
- Use case: when the Killer is right behind you and you’re about to be hit
3. 360 jukes
- Action: at a tight corner, suddenly reverse direction
- The Killer’s lock-on camera can’t turn fast enough
- Use case: tight loops (shack, jungle gyms)
The chase priority for Survivors
| Priority | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Run to a pallet or window — break line of sight |
| 2 | Loop the Killer (run in circles around an obstacle) |
| 3 | Drop pallet when Killer is close |
| 4 | After pallet drop, run to the next loop |
| 5 | Hide after breaking line of sight |
The chase priority for Killers
| Priority | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Predict the Survivor’s path (cut them off) |
| 2 | Mind-game at windows (pretend to vault, then attack) |
| 3 | Break pallets as soon as possible |
| 4 | Cut chase if the loop is unwinnable |
| 5 | Pressure another Survivor instead |
Common pitfall: as Survivor, running in straight lines. The chase is about using map features — straight lines = free hit.
5. The gen-rush meta: how to win as Killer
In 2026, gen-rush is the dominant Survivor strategy. Survivors spawn near 3 generators, all 4 repair at once, and finish all 5 generators in 5–7 minutes.
The 4 anti-gen-rush strategies
| Strategy | How it works |
|---|---|
| Corrupt Intervention | Block 3 farthest generators at match start — Survivors can’t all spawn near gens |
| 3-gen strategy | Identify the final 3 generators and patrol them — Survivors have to come to you |
| Gen regression perks | Pop Goes the Weasel / Surge — kick gens to make them regress |
| Pressure, not tunnel | Hit multiple Survivors, don’t commit to one chase |
The “3-gen” rule
This is the most important Killer concept in the current meta.
- Identify the final 3 generators (after Survivors repair 2)
- Patrol those 3 generators — don’t chase Survivors into corners of the map
- Force Survivors to come to you — they have to repair those 3 gens to escape
Common pitfall: chasing Survivors all over the map. Stay near the 3 gens, pressure them, don’t tunnel.
6. The 5 killer mistakes Silver / Gold rank makes
Mistake 1: Tunneling one Survivor
- Symptom: you chase one Survivor until they’re dead, then look for another
- Cost: 4 Survivors repaired 4 gens while you tunneled
- Fix: pressure, don’t tunnel — hit 2 different Survivors
Mistake 2: Camping hooks
- Symptom: you stand next to the hook
- Cost: 3 Survivors gen-rush while you camp
- Fix: leave the hook, patrol gens
Mistake 3: Ignoring the 3-gen
- Symptom: you chase Survivors into corners, let gens complete
- Cost: all 5 gens pop, Survivors escape
- Fix: stay near the 3-gen
Mistake 4: Breaking every pallet
- Symptom: you spend 5 seconds breaking each pallet
- Cost: Survivors gen-rush while you break pallets
- Fix: break pallets only when necessary, mind-game at windows
Mistake 5: No gen slowdown
- Symptom: you run 4 chase perks
- Cost: 5 gens pop in 6 minutes
- Fix: always run at least 1 gen slowdown perk
7. The 5 survivor mistakes Silver / Gold rank makes
Mistake 1: Running in straight lines
- Symptom: you get hit because the Killer predicts your path
- Fix: use pallets, windows, 360 jukes
Mistake 2: Self-caring when injured
- Symptom: you spend 32 seconds healing yourself in a corner
- Cost: Killer patrols the gens you should be on
- Fix: find a teammate for fast heals
Mistake 3: Not repairing during chases
- Symptom: you hide while your teammate is chased
- Cost: only 2 Survivors repairing, gens take longer
- Fix: always be repairing unless you’re chased or unhooking
Mistake 4: Going for risky unhooks
- Symptom: you unhook when the Killer is camping
- Cost: both you and the unhooked Survivor are downed
- Fix: wait for the Killer to leave, then unhook
Mistake 5: Body-blocking the Killer
- Symptom: you try to take hits for your teammate
- Cost: you go down too, Killer has 2 hooked Survivors
- Fix: run, hide, repair — don’t be a hero
8. Frequently asked mistakes (Silver to Gold)
| Survivor mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Running in straight lines | Easy chase | Use map features |
| Self-caring when injured | Wastes time | Heal with a teammate |
| Not repairing during chase | Wastes gen time | Always be repairing |
| Body-blocking the Killer | You both die | Run, repair, hide |
| Risky unhooks | Both of you die | Wait for the Killer to leave |
| Killer mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Tunneling one Survivor | Gen-rushed | Pressure multiple Survivors |
| Camping hooks | Gen-rushed | Patrol gens |
| Ignoring 3-gen | Gens complete | Stay near the 3-gen |
| Breaking every pallet | Wastes time | Mind-game instead |
| No gen slowdown | Gens complete in 6 min | Run Pop / Corrupt |
