7 Days to Die Base Building: From Wood Frame to Concrete Fortress (Blood Moon Ready)

The four base tiers, the strongest base designs for the Blood Moon horde, when to upgrade from wood to cobblestone to steel, and the defense layout that wins horde night without dying.

TL;DR: Base tiers are wood frame → cobblestone → steel → concrete. The classic horde-night design is a 4×4 cobblestone pillar with a 3-block-wide roof, surrounded by blade traps and log spikes. Upgrade to cobblestone by day 5 of your first week or the horde breaks your walls. Blade traps + log spikes are the most cost-effective defense.

1. The 4 base tiers: wood → cobblestone → steel → concrete

Each tier has different HP, cost, and upgrade path.

The upgrade path

The rebar trick

  • Adding rebar frames inside concrete blocks doubles the HP
  • Rebar frames are made from steel + forged iron
  • Always use rebar in concrete for horde night 5+

Common pitfall: skipping cobblestone and going straight to steel. Cobblestone is the workhorse tier — most players use it through horde night 5.


2. The classic horde-night base: the “Pillar” design

The most-tested horde base design is the cobblestone pillar. It’s been the meta since 2018 and is still strong in 2026.

The key features

  • 3–4 stories tall — gives you roof access for shooting
  • Cobblestone walls — the strongest tier you can build by day 7
  • Single entrance (door + ladder) — easy to defend
  • Roof hatch for escape
  • Surrounding blade traps — kills zombies before they reach walls
  • Log spikes — slows zombies approaching the base

The dimensions

  • Base footprint: 4×4 minimum, 5×5 ideal
  • Wall height: 3 blocks
  • Roof: 5×5, 1 block thick
  • Ladder: 1 block wide, against a wall
  • Door: 1, on the ground floor

Common pitfall: building a 1-story base. Zombies can climb 1 block but not 2+. Always build 3+ stories.


3. The defense layer: traps and spikes

Traps are the second line of defense. They kill zombies before they reach your walls.

The trap placement rule

  • Blade traps need power — connect them to a battery bank or generator
  • Place traps 2–3 blocks from walls — so they fire before zombies reach walls
  • Use multiple trap layers — first trap is the bait, second trap is the kill

Common pitfall: placing traps inside the walls. Zombies will already be at the wall by then. Place traps outside.


4. The roof design: where you shoot from

The roof is your primary defense position during the horde. Make it accessible and stocked.

The ideal roof

  • 3x3 minimum, 5x5 ideal
  • 1-block-thick cobblestone (not wood — zombies can break through)
  • Wooden railing around the edge — you can crouch behind it
  • Hole in the roof for ladder access (place hatch on top of hole)
  • Multiple shooters can stand on the roof (2–3 max)

The ammo stockpile

  • 200+ rounds of bullets (rifle or pistol)
  • 50+ arrows (crossbow, silent)
  • 10+ explosives (grenades, molotovs, rockets) for emergencies
  • Repair kits — walls break, repair during the horde

Common pitfall: running out of ammo mid-horde. Bring 500+ rounds to the roof.


5. The electric system: powering your traps

Blade traps, lights, and turrets need electricity. The electric system is its own subsystem.

The solar upgrade

  • Solar panels generate electricity during the day (no fuel)
  • Combine solar + battery bank for an off-grid base
  • Solar is OP for late-game bases

Common pitfall: building a generator without a battery bank. The generator runs out of fuel at 4 AM, your traps stop working. Always have a battery bank.


6. The upgrade roadmap: when to upgrade what

Day 1–7 (First blood moon)

  • Wood frame base, 2×2 or 3×3
  • Log spikes around the perimeter
  • Wooden spikes at the door

Day 8–14 (Second blood moon)

  • Cobblestone — upgrade the whole base
  • Iron spikes instead of wood
  • First blade traps (2–3 minimum)

Day 15–21 (Third blood moon)

  • Cobblestone + rebar for the core
  • Electric system — generator + battery bank + 5+ blade traps
  • Auto turret on the roof

Day 21+ (Late game)

  • Steel walls with rebar
  • Concrete for the most-hit zones
  • Solar panels for power
  • Electric fence around the perimeter

Common pitfall: upgrading too fast. Don’t upgrade to steel until day 21+. Cobblestone is enough for the first 3 hordes.


7. The 5 best base designs (ranked)

#1: Classic Pillar (cobblestone 4×4 with roof)

  • Strengths: easy to build, easy to defend, scales with upgrades
  • Weaknesses: small interior, limited storage
  • Best for: solo players, first 3 hordes

#2: Honeycomb (cobblestone 6×6 with internal maze)

  • Strengths: very defensive, lots of traps
  • Weaknesses: complex to build, easy to get lost in
  • Best for: co-op groups, mid-game

#3: Castle (steel/concrete 8×8 with parapets)

  • Strengths: end-game viable, beautiful
  • Weaknesses: expensive, time-consuming
  • Best for: late-game, established bases

#4: Sky Base (3+ stories tall with no ground entry)

  • Strengths: zombies can’t reach you
  • Weaknesses: vulnerable to demolishers (special zombies)
  • Best for: learning horde mechanics

#5: Underground (dug into the ground)

  • Strengths: very hidden, no zombie pathing
  • Weaknesses: demolishers dig you out
  • Best for: hardcore players

Common pitfall: building a sky base on day 7. Demolishers are special zombies that break blocks. They’ll reach you.
