Kojima PHYSINT -- Everything We Know 2026: Platforms, Setting, Cast, Xbox Connection
Kojima PHYSINT moved from PlayStation to Xbox on Sep 10 2026 after Sony cancelled the project in June. Platforms, setting, cast, story hints, and what to watch next.
TL;DR: PHYSINT is Hideo Kojima’s next-gen action-espionage IP, originally a PlayStation project announced at State of Play on January 31, 2024, but now published by Xbox after Sony cancelled the deal in mid-June 2026. Cast (Charlee Fraser, Don Lee, Minami Hamabe) is set; platforms, release date, and engine are not.

Who this is for
- Kojima-followers who watched Death Stranding 2 launch in June 2025 and want a single updated source for every PHYSINT fact.
- Xbox / PlayStation ecosystem players trying to decide whether to wait, wishlist, or skip until platforms drop.
- Action-espionage fans who want a curated timeline of confirmed vs. rumored details without tab-hopping through IGN, Eurogamer, and Kojima’s tweets.
1. The September 10, 2026 turning point: Sony out, Xbox in
The single biggest PHYSINT story of 2026 landed on September 10, six days before this article. Within the same hour, two official statements went live: PlayStation Studios announced it was stepping away from the project, and Xbox CEO Asha Sharma confirmed Xbox would publish PHYSINT instead.
Kojima’s own framing was direct. He told fans PlayStation delivered the cancellation “unexpectedly” in mid-June 2026, and that Kojima Productions spent roughly three months searching for a new publishing partner before settling on Xbox. Sharma’s statement was equally pointed:
“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox.”
By September 14, four days after the announcement, Sharma was physically inside Kojima Productions’ Tokyo offices for a working visit. Kojima posted photos wearing an Xbox-branded sweatshirt, and Sharma signed the studio’s signboard with the message “To invention and adventure together with Xbox.” This is no passive co-publishing deal; the two teams are working side by side.
The new partnership is broader than just games: Xbox and Kojima Productions also confirmed film and television collaborations, which suggests PHYSINT’s cinematic language will land across multiple formats over the next several years.
2. Platforms: confirmed vs. rumored
As of September 16, 2026, no platform list has been confirmed. Kojima Productions and Xbox have both declined to specify whether PHYSINT will be Xbox console-exclusive, multiplatform, or land on PC.
| Platform | Status | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | Confirmed publisher, platform TBD | Xbox is the publisher; whether Series X is the only console is unannounced. |
| Xbox Series S | Likely | Most Xbox-published titles ship on both current-gen SKUs. |
| PC (Windows / Steam) | Likely | Kojima Productions released Death Stranding DC and Death Stranding 2 on PC; the studio is comfortable with PC as a co-target. |
| PlayStation 5 | Confirmed canceled | PlayStation Studios stepped away on Sep 10, 2026. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Unconfirmed | Kojima has expressed public admiration for Switch 2 hardware, but no deal is in place. |
The safest read: expect Xbox Series X|S + PC on launch day, with Nintendo Switch 2 as a possible late-cycle port if a deal materializes. Do not treat any third-party “PHYSINT PS5 SKU leaked on retailer site” story as confirmed without a direct citation from Kojima Productions or Xbox.
3. The cast: confirmed at the 10th-anniversary event
The full cast was revealed at Kojima Productions’ 10th-anniversary event in December 2025:
- Charlee Fraser — Australian model and actress known for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Mad Max: Fury Road.
- Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) — South Korean actor best known in the US for Eternals (2021) and Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula (2020).
- Minami Hamabe — Japanese actress starring in Godzilla Minus One (2023) and the live-action Kaiju No. 8 series.
Charlie Fraser is also attached as the screenwriter for the related film project (also referred to as Tides), which sits inside the broader Xbox / Kojima Productions film-and-TV collaboration announced on September 10.
What is not confirmed: any role assignments, character names, or whether the cast will appear in-game via performance capture or only in cinematic cutscenes. Kojima has historically used mo-cap actors extensively (Norman Reedus in Death Stranding, Mads Mikkelsen in Death Stranding 2), so a heavy performance-capture role is the most likely path.
4. Setting and story: what Kojima has actually said
PHYSINT is officially described as a next-generation action-espionage game and as Kojima’s return to the genre he pioneered with Metal Gear Solid. Kojima has used the phrase “completely new ‘Action Espionage’ for the next-generation” and emphasized “cutting-edge technology” with top talent from both film and games.
The working title PHYSINT is widely interpreted as “Physical Intelligence,” a riff on real-world intelligence-gathering disciplines (HUMINT, SIGINT, CYBINT, TECHINT) that Kojima has referenced throughout his career — Metal Gear Solid 1 literally had a character named Sigint. That said, Kojima has not officially confirmed the meaning, and fans should treat all “definitive” etymology posts as speculation.
Confirmed not-connected: PHYSINT is not set in the Death Stranding universe. There is no shared lore, no chiral network references, no BB / Bridges references, no timefall. Death Stranding is expanding separately through the Death Stranding: Mosquito anime and the A24 live-action film (directed by Michael Sarnoski).
Confirmed not-a-sequel: PHYSINT is not a canonical Metal Gear Solid continuation. Kojima left Konami in 2015 and has repeatedly said the MGS timeline is closed. PHYSINT is a spiritual successor in genre, not a sequel in story.
5. Release window: expect silence through 2026
There is no release date or release window as of September 2026. Given the publisher switch, expect a longer pre-release runway than usual — a rough analogy is Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2, which was first teased in 2022 and shipped in June 2025 (about three years from public reveal to launch). A 2027 or 2028 window is plausible but not confirmed.
Any third-party date you see floating around — a “leaked 2027 release” YouTube thumbnail, a retailer placeholder, an anonymous ResetEra post — should be treated as rumor until Kojima Productions or Xbox explicitly confirm.
6. How this fits into Kojima Productions’ 2026 slate
PHYSINT is one of three major Kojima Productions IPs in active development or release:
- Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — released June 26, 2025 on PS5; PC version shipped in 2026 via Valve’s platform. This is the studio’s most recent shipped title.
- OD — the horror project originally revealed at The Game Awards in December 2023 in partnership with Xbox (specifically the Xbox Game Studios publishing arm) and Jordan Peele. OD remains an Xbox-published title and is unaffected by the PHYSINT publisher switch.
- PHYSINT — now Xbox-published, genre return to action-espionage, cast locked, platforms TBD.
This means Xbox is now the publisher of two out of Kojima Productions’ three active projects, a meaningful consolidation. PlayStation’s only remaining Kojima tie-in is Death Stranding 2’s existing publishing relationship.
